RE fuel usage - veering to GPS

Where I live is a town of say 15,000 people and its not on any of the GPS
maps at all.

Sorry JB, but somewhere I missed that you had bought a satnav/GPS and
had done a speed check. I can't advise on doing a measured mile with
one of those things, but a plain old GPS will measure your distance
travelled down to the last yard/metre, so surely you can do that on
your satnav?
I appreciate the problem with GPS maps, if you think its difficult in
civilised Ireland then you should try it in Bosnia! That is why we
use hand-held GPS, but I also use EasyGPS software (its free on the
net) and it links to a good map site on the net, and I can print out
sketch maps with even small local villages on it. So you should be
able to find the same for Ireland surely?

Thanks for you interest but it seems I am to be lost in the void of the not
there just yet GPS where am I. The unit I have is a Navman 510 which is good
if the maps are there for it.
I have tried the EasyGPS and it seems it is not compatable with my unit,
Itried anothe common site that gives maps in 3D but again only for the hand
held PC. So when the kids say are we there yet I have to say , were not
anywhere yet. I really thought it would be good to use here because our
signs and roads are crap. I have got lost more times here than any other
country, so beware of the roundabout or cross roads with four exits and no
signs.

Sorry I can't help with satnav JB - its a bit like auto boxes with me
too, you will remember. But perhaps you highlight the usefulness of a
simple GPS for finding where you are, whether you have a newly
printed map from the net or a re-print of the latest Victorian era
map from your local town hall ! This is why I got the Garmin Summit
(for climbers and walkers) to use in a country devoid of satnav
mapping - but with plenty of mountains. So keep a lookout for a
secondhand Garmin with mono screen, they should be cheap now that
they have moved-on to colour screens.
