Ready Made Expedition Roof Rack

Alright Guys
It's a real pain trying to source all the bits and bobs for Africa in
Ireland. Everything has to be imported. And when doing it in bits and
bobs the carriage and time taken really adds up and the bits I
invariably miss out or forget to order have to be re-imported.
So I'm going for a one stop shop option for the roof rack.
I previously posted notes on how to dodge VAT and import duty on
imported expedition equipment. I'm now going to put that into action and
source a fully equipped expedition roof rack from South Africa. Savings
will be posted later.
Will also manage to dodge the SA VAT :) + The euro is strong against
the Rand.
Total savings over UK high street prices will be posted when finalised.
The following is the spec of the Rack:
1 x Full length expedition roof rack to Fit 1995 80 series Toyota
Landcruiser. 3.2Meters. Complete with all fittings.
Roof Rack to be fitted with the following:
1 x Technitop Roof Tent and ladder fitted to rear of rack. Rear entry.
Current model with hatch on roof.
1 x Easi Awn awning. 3 meter fitted to the rack. Drivers side.
1 x Lockable Double Jerry can holder. Fitted to Rack.
1 x Lockable Gas cylinder holder. Fitted to Rack.
1 x High lift jack, complete with dust cover. Fitted to Rack.
4 x Lightforce, 240 Blitz, spot lights mounted to front of roof rack (or
equavilent).
1 x Swivel type Work lamp mounted to rear of rack - if practical
1 x Butterfly type spare wheel/tyre holding down bracket. Fitted to rack
to suite above.
All goods wooden crated for containarised sea freight transportation.
Question:
Am I missing anything that would be useful to get while at it.
Any thoughts welcome
Thanks
Niall

hi - full on bit of kit! only other thing you might mount up there is a
spade. i can recommend, from hard won experience that, when you need one,
only a genuine hi-lift jack will do. i've had offerings from the black rat
from australia (main "h" bar bent) and a farm jack (ratchet went). do you
have any pictures that the supplier sent? how are you securing the hi-lift -
is that part of the package?
would be very interested in the landed pricing when you get all that kit as
well.

Get them to strap a LC underneath and drive it up from SA?
I know what you mean on buying in from overseas - usually I add a few bit
that I then don't need and find something obvious that I missed.
Sounds like a lot of kit - what is the weight (on the roof, excluding
packing)?

Niall,
Just as trying to source all the bits and bobs for Ireland
in Africa. That should put you in the right mood! :)
What's the name of the supplier?
What about traction aids?

Understood re Hi-lift
No pictures yet, but the intention is to mount hi-lift to one of those
special mounting brackets. Have one on my current rack.
Intention is for everything to come as one package, then use a forklift
or block and tackle to mount it, then drive on!
I'm going to be working away from home right upto departure so want to
minimise the messing about.
Still have the internals to kit out....
Cheers

Re> seat covers for everyone.
When coming back will throw a few sets into the container!!

Make sure your Irish gas bottle goes into a South-African gas cylinder
holder.
I remember you already have storage space for water, otherwise, add 2
jerrycans.
Instead of your rear swivel light, I am personally more in favour of neon
lights : they burn less energy. You could ask for the ones made by Hella but
they require a special plug (they usually come with it) which you can fit
wherever you want and then connect to the battery.
As for a double quotation for the freight : one in a shared container (LDL
mode) or an airfreight. The price difference can be minimal as the shared
container option is an expensive one on surface transport.
Good luck !

Re Weight
Agreed - a lot of weight. Too much. But necessary...
Tent =3D 60KG.
Rack =3D say 80KG not sure waiting for suppliers to come back with
proposed specifications
Jerries =3D say 36KG if full
HLJ =3D say 12KG
Gas =3D say 12KG
Wheel =3D say 70KG
Rekon I'll put the 6th wheel low down in the vehicle but retain the
option of putting a dirty spare on the roof if necessary at times.
If I can fit the tent directly onto rails then I might be able to avoid
getting such a big rack, just mount the small one I have in front of the
tent.
Will see how we go...
Thanks
Niall

Hi Roman
Re > What's the name of the supplier?
Talking to Safari Centre + will be onto 1 or 2 others that a buddy of
mine in SA is going to hook me up with.
Re > What about traction aids?
Have a set of foldable upabble sandladder type things I picked up cheap
second hand... Not sure if they're any good. Still have to test them,
but they look like the're OK... :-?
Cheers

Has to be what it has to be - just noticed there was no mention of weight
for the rack, I know you have already spend a lot of time thinking about
weight, - not likely to be made from 100mm C section but you never know!
I drew up a pickup tray for one of my LC, using what I though was a
reasonable compromise between strength and material, even though I am not
very concerned by the weight, (it's not going overland and when empty some
weight is useful on the pickup), I revised my choices when I calculated the
total weight.

You've obviously done a lot of work and you're getting yourself sorted. I
think the rack is going to be heavy and you will get the old pendulum
effect. Also, maybe a 3m rack is a bit long...? You're going to get a lot of
overhang one end or the other and maybe at both...
If you put a spare wheel on the roof with the butterfly mount, make sure you
strap it down as well. The mounts can snap if they get worked on hard roads
day after day - unlikely but it has happened - what I do is tie the wheel
down with ratchet straps in an X shape, using old inner tubes to sit between
strap and tyre so the strap doesn't cut up on the edge of the tread. I am
about to fit ally cargo rails down the side of the rack with moveable load
hooks that can be taken out when not needed. A big heavy tyre flying around
could be interesting...

Hi Niall,
I for one would really appreciate that VAT info again please, either on ELCO
or to my personal address which is [Email address removed]
I would alo be very interested In buying a roof rack at the same time, if
that might be of interest to you- possibly you might be able to negotiate a
discount for 2 racks- not sure if the saving is worth it, but potentially I
could take a weekend break in Ireland to pick the rack up from you :) it
would be a good excuse anway!
Think very carefully about putting weight on roof racks, every year a group
of us do a 3 week overland trip somewhere (last time it was the Pyranees,
this year it's Portugal, year before was morocco etc). Every year without
fail I end up repacking the vehicle to remove weight from the roof- I just
find it too scary to drive with all the weight up there. This year I am only
going to be carrying a roof rack with tent- that's it! I have seen quite a
few accidents where overland vehicles have tipped over due mainly to the
weight of the roof rack.
Cheers
Jim

Pinged that e-mail over to you...
Re getting 2 racks.
Am pushing the realms of EU and Irish legality a bit
Have to keep it to the bear mimimum as I'll be interviewed by customs as
part of the process.
2 racks would blow my cover stoty
But will keep you posted and perhaps you can do something the same...
Cheers

Hi Niall,
Are you intending for the rack to go over the bonnet? 2.3m would be a
better size for the roof.

Hi James,
If you only want a tent up there, don't bother with a rack, just use
roof rails - that is all you need for most tents.
