Rear Locker

I seem to be having trouble engaging the standard rear locking diff on my
Cruiser. The manual describes how to engage with the manual box but not the
auto. Any suggestions?

Mark,
I had an auto 90 (Colorado) 2002 and the rotary switch on the
dash does the rear locker. To the left of the steering column.

It looks from reading my manual that the auto box should be in 'N' and
4WD lever in 'LL' and the vehicle stationery because it says the diff
will unlock if you shift to 'H' or 'HL'. I've never tried to use mine
and wouldn't want to except on mud. I tried 'HL' on the road and that
was fine except I couldn't get the damn thing to unlock for ages which
made manouvering very difficult. Also check the diff lock fuse which is
probably in the fuse box below the diff lock switch. Hope this helps

Thanks Rod
I have used the rear locker a couple of times in the past to get up steep
wet grass banks. I just seem to be having problems to get it to engage now.
The red light for the rear diff comes on flashing but will not stay on. In
the manual car, it says let the clutch out slowly as if maybe the diff needs
to move a little to enable it to lock, but as I don't fully understand how
the system works this really is only a guess. Any more ideas? Also,
briefly how does the loccker work?
On a posative note, I'm having a set of BF A/T's fitted on Thursday.

Hi
I'm on a 100, but same principle may apply...
Rear diff lock engages probably only if:
1. Low range in transferbox
2. DiffLock in transferbox (may follow automatically by 1.)
3. Speed < 5 km/h
4. Wheels are rotating (not spinning) with different speed
5. Electronic activator is functioning
Worth considering:
A. Sensor for 2. may be faulty, or wires loose
B. If both rear wheels are slipping, they may rotate with same speed,
hindering engagement as lockers parts do not move internally
C. Activator 5. may be corroded over years
D. Some parts may be sticky if not used fequently, so some on/off activation
may loosen it up.
Had trouble with mine some month ago, was nearly going to dismanthe
something, as the thing suddenly worked and have done so ever since...
Regards
Henrik

Mark,
If the light is flashing the diff is waiting to lock, it will
lock when the wheels start to turn unevenly or spin for one rev.

Hi Henrik,
Out of interest, can you get the centre diff lock switch for the 100 as
you can with the 80 to override the normal functionality?

Hi Julian
Q: Out of interest, can you get the centre diff lock switch for the 100 as

A: Yes. There is a similar pin-7 modification. I think I found a description
of how to do it at
http://www.buschtaxi.org/de/05umbau/technik/zentraldiff_j10.html
I have tried it, bus as I am not currently convinced that it does not alter
the lockup mechanism of the automatic transmission, I dare not use it.
BTW - shortly before an A343 (used at the V8) transmission fails, you may
expirience some minor driveline vibrations, more significant under load. As
this is very shortly before failure, check of transmission fluid colour and
smell may be very relevant. Do not drive it if you suspect transmission
failure, as a switch of converter may be a lot cheaper (not sure if that is
the right word, though) than a completely new box (wich will be needed if
the converter disintegrates, distributing metal splines all over the box
components while running - you get the picture, I am sure).
Regards
Henrik

Hi Henrik,
I've done it on my 80, but in hindsight I would probably just go for
disconnecting the cable from the auto box (the other option) which would give
me the same shifting pattern in low range as you have in high.
