Recycling engine oil

Hi all
There's been a lot of talk about changing oil frequently, which is
fine. There's little mention, however, about what to do with used oil.
What do you do to dispose of it? I have one or two jerry cans full of
used oil that I am not sure where to take. The council claim I could
leave it in front of the gate in sealed plastic containers for usual
rubbish collection but I am pretty sure the dustmen would never bother
(you should see how many things they refuse to collect in Ealing!).
So, what's the easiest way?

Roman, our local waste transfer station, posh for - tip, has a big tank
for waste oil and oil filters, just tip it in as much as you like.
I also use it to "paint" all the fenceposts with up the farm. Stops
most of the horses from nibbling the tops, prevents rot and keeps the
ramblers off - job done!!
Cheaper than creosote.
Gareth.

In 2003 the European Union banned creosote for amateur and unlicensed
professional use, due to concerns over these health effects, noting that
recent research had shown that the risk of skin cancer had perhaps been
underestimated previously.
Also more available!

The EU - bless them.
Funny how they ban loads of supposedly "dangerous" products and cite
possible carcingnogenic links and yet they subsidise EU farmers to
produce tobacco and have no intention of banning smoking - when these
links are proven.
Creosote - readily available with an agricultural holding number. We
have plenty, but old engine oil is free.
Gareth.

Really??!!
I want some, how can I go about getting a few litres? Hint, hint!! ;-)

Hi Roman,
I either take it to the tip or give it to a friend of mine who runs a
waste oil burner for the heating in his workshop.

Julian,
I tried to buy a waste oil burner (for a large workshop) last year and
couldn't find one cheap enough.
Anyone any ideas? (preferably very cheap)
(Ebay usually comes up with gas burners and expensive heating oil burners.)

Not so silly,
http://www.clarustechnologies.com/manufacturing_services/oilcat/index.html
http://tinyurl.com/js5dz
seems a very basic system, type 2 fuel is road diesel
or
http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/08/recycling_used.php
http://tinyurl.com/gm2hq
more complex system for type 1, heating fuel but should work with road
diesel is you have $48K to spend!
I know some diesels continuously burn a small quantity of the lube oil as
fuel and "top up" with fresh oil, that way they avoid oil changes and
disposing of lube oil - main problem with all of the above is if your
filtration is poor the soot and other impurities in the oil will wear the
pump and injectors.

today's silly answer... refine it and put it in the fuel tank.=A0 can it be
any worse than vegetable oil from the local chip shop?

A buddy of mine bouight the "plans" of a waste oil burner on e-bay last year.
Not sure how many KW or BTU's it threw out.
He's on holidays, but if you're interested I could get a copy of them over to you when he gets back.
