My friends 120 lc3 is having gear box troubles. He just did a engine rebuild but now it only goes in reverse. Any ideas? Or is he looking at a gear box rebuild?

Sounds (if manual) like the clutch isn't disengaging properly.

Or someone hasn't relocated the gear lever into the gearbox properly...

Can you select the gears but no drive, or is the problem not being able to select them?

It's an auto; able to select gears but no drive

In that case he needs to retrace his steps with whatever was taken off for the rebuild. I don't know this truck but there maybe links from the ECU that 'talk' to the gearbox.

One other possibility is that the box is low on ATF. These boxes need to be checked for level when hot after cycling through all gears. Long periods of standing idle sometimes mean they'll take a while to get back going again as the ATF drains more fully into the sump. It may well be worth checking the ATF level and adjusting accordingly. It's also worth checking the ATF condition to see if it has water in it.
