RGS Overland Workshop

A bit more information below.
Royal Geographical Society Overland Travel Workshop
The Royal Geographical Society is organising an Overland Travel Workshop
in Yorkshire on Saturday May 23rd.
The format will involve several speakers and presentations on overland
travel, as well as example vehicles, maps and paperwork to discuss.
Though primarily being a Saturday event, there is provision for
overnight camping if attendees wish to carry on the activities the next
day. You may have seen it advertised in the April issue of Land Rover
Owner magazine (page 15).
The plan is that visitors will be planning to make an overland trip of
their own and will want to find out the nitty-gritty of paperwork,
vehicle preparation, equipment, budget, route and so on. There is no
desire on the part of the organisers to make money, only to raise
awareness of overland travel as a means of exploring the world we live
in. A small fee is charged to traders (?100) to cover our costs.
Confirmed speakers so far are, alphabetically; Peter and Eileen Crichton
(double circumnavigation, LR Discovery 1), Mike and Margaret Hingley
(South Africa and Namibia, LR Defender), Graham and Claire Spark (UK ?
Cape Town, LR Defender), David Palmer of Terrain Adventures (Medical and
Emergency provision and equipment, LR Defender) and Sam Watson (Desert
and bush travel, LR Defender). You may note a distinct Land Rover bias.
This is partly by design, as Land Rover is a major supporter of the
Royal Geographical Society, but also partly by chance! We do not mean to
discourage the Toyota (or whoever else!) contingent!
The organisers think it?s important to have a ?select few? trade stands
there to enable ?first time? overlanders to think about what they need.
Trade stands are ?100 per trader ? a nominal charge to cover our costs.
It?s the first time we are running this event, and it is being
publicised firstly by the Royal Geographical Society on a national
level, 4x4 and overland travel internet forums and also by the 4x4
press, so we have no idea about numbers attending, though we hope they
will be reasonably high. We have received emails confirming visitor
attendance already. We are trying to avoid the ?4x4 Show? feel in favour
of a constructive ?workshop?.
The venue is a small Prep School in the Howardian Hills AONB ? a very
scenic location. We have the use of the lecture facilities and open
spaces. This is however NOT a commercial venue. For those wishing to
stay overnight we can only offer space for vehicle-based camping ? but
that fits very much in with the theme of the event!
There will be catering provided by the local pub, who have also brewed a
real ale especially for the event ? ?Overlander?. There will also be a
braai / BBQ in the evening, to which all are welcome, traders, attendees
and speakers alike, on a ?bring your own food? basis.
Importantly, again due to space limitations, we must restrict traders to
a maximum of TWO 4x4s PER COMPANY, and no ancillary vehicles to remain
on site (vans, HGVs).
Location
Terrington Hall Prep School, Terrington, York
(Take A64 north from York, turn off A64 and follow sign for Terrington
Lavender Farm to get to Terrington village!)
OS Grid SE 672707, Lat N 54? 07.733? Long W 0? 58.412?
Facilities
All events are on the Saturday so there is no need to stay overnight
unless you want to for social or logistic reasons.
There is vehicle-based camping on site, but no facilities apart from a
single loo block. However as Overlanders that shouldn?t worry us too
much! Ground tents are fine but please ? no fires! (unless they are in
firepits that don?t touch the ground) Roof tents are ideal and most folk
will be sleeping in them.
The location is pretty remote ? a small village. There is no nearby fuel
station, only a small village shop and intermittent mobile signal on
most networks.
Costs
Attendance as a member of the public will cost ?5 per vehicle,
regardless of number of folk inside ? just to help cover our costs. This
is not intended to be a profit-making event, but instead to share
knowledge and experience of overland travel.
Catering
A buffet lunch will be available and in the evening we will have a
barbecue arrangement, but evening food is very much on an informal
?bring your own? basis. ?Overlander? real ale (brewed especially for us
by the local Storyteller Brewery) will be available and suggested
donations for this are ?2 a pint.
Trade Info
If you are coming as a trader, the cost is ?100. This is obviously much
less than at 4x4 Shows ? the reason being that this is a fairly low-key
event. Please limit ?on site? attendance to two cars or 4x4s max, plus a
van if needed, and no HGVs.
We anticipate that the trade will take place on Saturday. Please feel as
much a social part of the event as the attendees and enjoy the
after-hours braai etc!

Hello Paul,
Intresting observation! The Royal Geographical Society takes aboard LR
as the exponent of its idea, aimed at fostering "an understanding and
informed enjoyment of our world". Whose world, what informed
enjoyment, you may wonder?

Yeah, it seems this way, although they mention Toyota in passing, the RGS is
basically 'geared up' to LR enthusiasts. I know this because I am a Fellow
of the RGS, and I've been to a few of their 'expedition'
preparation/planning workshops; in my case to generate interest in North
Africa travel. I've even met the likes of Ray Mears (who is not really a
total LR fan as some people think, although he does use LRs quite a lot, in
Australia and places he uses Toyo, and this is not just because they are
more easily obtained to 'borrow'!).
The RGS is, like many, an institutionalised establishment, some would say
quite 'clicky', but hey! This is the nature of the RGS IME!
I don't know whether any of you have had dealings with the Libyan Society in
London (I'm a member here too...but please don't judge me on this...:)), but
they took serious exception to one of my trips - only because I didn't 'go
through them' as it were. I have my own contacts in Libya, which I use.
The RGS are good for expedition planning as far as it goes, but I guess they
feel they have to 'support' LR (peer pressure mostly) because LR used to be
"British(!)"
Cheers
Renate, who's prepping up l'beast to head to the Sahara - again.

Well, wouldn't we all be surprised if the RGS weren't closely tied to
Land Rover? After all, London's a lot closer to Solihull than Nagoya.
Toyota have never marketed their vehicles as expedition warhorses in the
UK, in fact never imported the 45/75/78 apart from the former in very
small quantities. Is it any wonder that the UK-centric view tends to
ignore Landcruisers? (and Patrols and K1500s, et al) They're generally
seen as an "SUV" which is good at towing.
Given the above, and the anachronicity that's implied by any
organisation with "Royal" in its name, I'm not exactly expecting a
rousing welcome when I turn up in my bright yellow 80 on the 23rd.
However, I've never been to one of these RGS workshops before, and as
it's only an hour's drive away I'll trundle over with an open mind.
I'm especially intrigued by the statement about the special beer -
"suggested donations for this are ?2 a pint". Does that mean it could
be free, donations being optional and all? :)
Cheers

I say this - go and show them whose's boss...I once walked into an RGS
seminar after just getting back from Africa - my clothes were more or less
clean but I'd been wearing them just a couple of days earlier in North
Africa - I arrived to see a sea of po-faced people with their conventional
way of dressing and looking at things, I must confess I found it quite
amusing - I loved the effect my dusty outfit had on them, I guess I still
smelled of diesel or oil or something.
There was a banquet in the honour of someone or other, and I breezed in in
my 'African gear'. I was meeting a friend of mine who returned to Cape Town
a few years ago, and was with another friend. At the dinner I sat around a
table with a number of others - I believe they found it quite awkward, but I
guess there are occasions when a breath of fresh air is just what is needed.
All very clicky, I must say. I only attend very rarely these days, as its
rather too stuffy for me and it costs me diesel to get to London.
So, go and show them what a toyo is capable of doing...and enjoy yourself!
Tell us all about it when you get back. I will likewise be 'up there in the
North' but I'll be in the Dales - I might pop over if I've got time though.

I always wondered if Toyota avoided the UK pre the 60 series because of some
back room deal with Land Rover, the 40 series sold well in the US, they also
got the 50 and 60 series but they didn't get the 70 series or diesels.
Good to hear your open minded about free beer, sounds a good policy.
I am sure the RGS will overlook the yellow SUV, you might even convert a few
from Land Rovers.

Excellent. Then they can see what a proper expedition-prepared 80 looks
like, instead of my old shed. :)

Hi Folks,
Nila & I also plan to attend the Overland Workshop.
Perhaps a small discreet 'ELCO Sticker' might be a useful thing, so people
can see who we are and it is easy to recognise each other out on the circuit
or at meetings like this.
Does anybody out there have know-how or ideas of how to facilitate it?
(Obviously not possible for this event)

Hi
I will be there with a stand to promote www.theoverlander.org
It would be good to meet you all as i missed the ELCO meeting due to a trip
around the highlands, so call in on the stand and say hello- i will
hopefully have my 80 there, an MAN lorry and a bike, so it may help to
dilute the LRs !
Cheers
Stan

Hi all,
I should be there - will be on the R'dam - Hull ferry the night before
unless anything goes wrong (coming up from South France so got a bit of a
long journey first, should make it though).
Do I need to book or reserve anywhere?
Cheers,
