Skid plate

Hi guys;
My vehicle is still equiped with the standard tranny "plastic" skid plate.
I'm looking to upgrade it to a decent mud and rock resitant one.
Found a Euro website doing these things.
http://www.kos-motorsport.de/start.php
These guys are talking about "unterfahrschutze".
Just wondering if anyone has any strong recommendations.

Chris,
"Unterfahrschutz aus ALU 6 mm f=FCr Toyota HDJ 80"
Bling, bling, bling!
Better save EUR 249 on something more useful, like a new set of tyres.

That's what I was thinking.
Landing the serious weight of a 80 on 6 or 8 mm of aluminium is probably not
very healthy for the ALU.
Not very Toyota like either. It should be able to stand up to guys like me
;-)

Hi Chris
I too have thought about the skid plates and such and looked and looked at
some of what was available.
They all seem to be 8mm Alu and can be expensive if you want more than one
and add the shipping.
I got some advice from the list a good while ago which was,
if you have a problem with the Alu its hard to get it fixed especially out
of town or country.
the ALU will bend a bit but because its softer it can be pierced by a sharp
object,
the Alu could give at it anchor points being the holes where it is attacked
to the cruiser.
I have tried to get someonr to make me some out of metal about 4 or 5mm but
had no luck yet.
I just had a bumper made after months of looking after I dent mine off road
and I am thinking up a plan to add a skid plate, somehow to this bumper.

Hi John;
Well you've summed up my doubts about these ALU tranny skid plates.
I've beached my 80 several times on a mix of earth and stones.
And tearing holes in your skid plate is what it should be able to withstand.
There is one company in the USA that makes a steel one for the tranny.
Slee offroad or something.
For the non-diesel versions of our 80's.
Maybe I'll drop them a line. But in the meanwhile I'm open for Euro
sudgestions.

Be cheaper 2 get one made by a local fabricator/welder.
Shipping the skid plate (believe he just does a tranny cover - but its good
n beefy) will cost mucho $
I've a full skid plate made up 4 mine (might be able 2 drag up some pics)
for the front (does go back 2 tranny case - that was phase 2 :) when I got
my roof rack made. Nice n solid but saying that don't think I've ever seen a
dent on it or a big scratch (but have plenty on other parts of
undercarriage) so maybe its not necessary and other bits get hit first!

Chris please forgive old JB's memory. He forgot to tell you that when
he first posted his query I reported on my experience.
On my Pajero I have an 8mm ally plate running back from under the
front bumper. The Paj is lower to the ground than the 80 but it
has done the worst that Salisbury Plain can throw at it and it
survived with apparently little bad effect. (One of our new ELCO
playmates was there that day too). Being ally it also makes it easy
to handle on one's own when it needs dropping for maintenance; in my
case, to renew the front anti-roll bar bushes on the Paj.
My 80 has never had a plate under it except for that one Toy put
under the transfer case, yet I have been through horrific conditions
in the Balkans with it for 4 years without a scratch, and the UN gave
it a good hammering on convoy escort duty before I got it. Such an
accessory was never fitted on any of the Toy 4WD fleets that I have
had at work either. They are nice to have for peace of mind
admittedly. But I think you have to be a regular bog hopper with
spare cash to justify fitting one. If you are, then enjoy spending
it, but don't discount ally.
Cheers

Hi Jon;
As you say, it's mostly a peace of mind thing.
On my former 70 I never had anything but the stock plate.
I went through some horrible stuff with it.
Actually other than a scratch nothing was noticeble after a good days
off-roading.
My 80 is actually more a parade horse than an off-road beasty. This year I
haven't done
any offroading at all. Work commitments, family outings etc. etc.
But I just love to tinker on it. No pressure, no hassle, just me and my
wrench ;-)
Read a few threads on www.buschtaxi.org about unterfahrschutze and these
guys also
like the ALU skid plates. So I've decided to go for the KOS 8 mm ally skid
plates.
Time permitting I'll give her a good pressure wash on the underside, then a
liberal coating of
3M anti-gravel and the ally plates for the finishing touch.
Peace of mind indeed.
As for offroading these last months, got a 20 year old Peugeot 103 scooter
up and running.
Front tire blowout at it's max speed of 65 km/h sent me wobbling and jumping
all over the place.
How about that for a first test-drive ;-)
Summer has arrived so these last few weekends I've been exploring the murky
depths of a local creek
in search of Carp.
Always out and about, with a trusty TOY as an ever faithfull companion.
Thank God the misses doesn't read this ;-)
Cheers all and thanks for the info.
