Snorkel

I am going to Iceland soon and have been advised to fit a snorkel. I
don't much favour plastic and wondered if any of you had the name of a
supplier, or any experience with, stainless or aluminium snorkels?
Thanks for any advice that is forthcoming.
Regards, Clive.

Hi Clive,
Out of interest, what do you have against the plastic ones?

Clive,
Safari snorkels are standard issue and are good enough for the price.
S/S or Alu probably exist but are esoteric enough to be hard to get (I
bet no one in this country wil sell them) and must cost a fortune.

No experience of stainless or aluminium snorkels here Clive, but plenty
of Safari plastic one. Something to consider: if you bend or flatten the
Safari it pops back into shape - I doubt that will happen with a
stainless or aluminium one.
Best Regards,
Jon.

Julian,
I have the opinion that plastic one's will damage irrepairably
easier than stainless.

Do snorkels actually work? I would rather clean out my air filter every 2-3
days in deserts conditions and avoid wading through water so deep that a
snorkel is needed. Not happened to me for a good few years but wading
through water is to be avoided if at all possible as water damages
everything it touches particularly when things are hot after a days driving.
Amongst my current mods, a snorkel is not amongst them. But I may be
wrong... Hope not.

Jeremy,
It sounds as though you do not need one. Since 1990 I have driven a
Landover 101FC and the air intake is quite high and protected compared to an
80, on some of my trips I have had water 1/2 way up the doors which is say
up the windscreen of an 80 I guess I would have need it if I was still doing
the same things. I once dieseled an engine, con rods strait through the
crank case of a 6 L Bedford engine, quite a mess!
I think that some of the better snorkels on Landover's and agricultural
vehicles have cyclonic traps that dispel stones and small particles and if
you are at the end of a convoy traveling in dusty conditions then yes they
do work. Some of the more modern plastic jobs have had a case made for them
in terms of a ram effect on air intake but others say that inlet tracts have
to be tuned lengths like exhausts so unless it has been measured who knows.
There is always the wow factor if one is a poser I suppose.
Not on my list of early modes either, I think that tyres and a suspension
job will be all that I can muster for some time unless it is a DIY wring
harness, draws, 7 pin mod with switchable lower ratio shift points, SH lamps
etc I have left some thing out but it can't be expensive. It is a step that
need thinking about because I would think that plating it up again so that
you could sell it may cost a bit and who would buy a car full of holes, I
am not that much attached to it to want to keep it for ever. Now if it was
a 718 Pinzgauer well I may settle with that for ever. Unfortunately I would
have to join another forum.
