Snorkle [ foam air filter]

Hi Guys
Just while on the subject of the snorkle, If it is turned backwards will the
air flow into the engine be reduced , cause you always see them pointed
forward, but this is also the angle that the dirt comes from , would it make
sence to turn it the other way and reduce the dirt inhaled.
Are the reusable foam air filters better than the paper ones. Does any one
know of a good place to buy these, I tried Amsoil but they only do one for
the petrol 80 some thing to do with being an amarican oil company.

John,
Suction caused by engine pistons going down is so strong that pointing
the snorkel endpiece forward or backwards may change matters only by a
very small fraction - you'll never notice. For the same reason dirt
that's likely to be sucked in, will be sucked in regardless.
The cost of paper filters vs reusable filters, IMHO, does not justify
the trouble to wash a foam filter.

Hi Julian
Your right as usual I think I will stick with the paper filter, less hasel
and just as good once its looked after. I had a look at the hand book but
could'nt find if there was a filter in the wing at the start of the air
intake, is there one.

Oil wet foam filters come into their own in a couple of situations; dust
and fine dry particles and water getting on to them. I.e. the oil stops
the water wetting them so they are consistently wet rather than the air
flow changing.
I think most people consider them an unnecessary hassle in the UK unless
if you are racing and splashing great volumes of water down the intake -
if you are don't forget you need drain holes! They are a huge hassle to
use them correctly. The filter oil is really sticky and disgusting to
handle and they need cleaning very regularly. However ... they do work
well when required.
