Morning All,
Just thought I would bring you up to date in my LC.
I checked the fuel tank - it is pretty well spotless although there is
about a table spoon full of mucky water in the bottom which I plan to
extract using a turkey basting pipette normally used for extracting the
fat from under the juices with your sunday roast - I have one of these
in my toolbox for ages and are really handy for things like this and
getting old brake fluid out of the reservoir when flushing with new
fluid.
The filter on the pickup had a few minor bits caught in it but nothing
that would restrict flow.
The fuel filler cap does have a spring loaded valve in it that whilst
working might have been sticking - I have stripped it down, cleaned and
re-assembled.
The tank breather is working to a degree, but I am going to replace the
valve and re-route the pipe to up inside the D pillar near the vent.
It is difficult to tell if the filter was suffering - there was no
water in the bottom, but I have replaced the filter just in case.
The bad news is that I checked the filter near the fuel stop solenoid
[be very careful removing it, there is a little spring in there that
can drop out very easily!!] And found some small shards of metal - only
about half a dozen bits about 2-3mm long, but enough to cause concern.
I have been quoted a worse case scenario cost of about ?600 to strip
down and re-calibrate the pump including replacing the items most
likely to have worn [the guy mentioned a couple of items that could
cause shards in the filter] as well as a full service of the injectors
with the nozzles being replaced [normally ?10/injector to service or
?22/injector to service and replace nozzles].
The prices are certainly better than I thought they could be.
I am going to put her back together today to see how she runs - if she
is back to her old self I will aim to do the pump and injectors in
about a month [when I will also check the valves] otherwise if she is
still rough I will do it now.
Talking to Clive and a couple of others, there does appear to be issues
with fuel quality and the fact that some fuels contain less lubricants
for the pumps than others and that it might be worth using additives
every so often - it might be useful to try to consolidate views on
this.
