South Wales road trip - looking for lane suggestions

I'm planning a family road trip down to the Gower Peninsular tomorrow going via Hereford, Brecon, Merthyr, Neath and down and then either a quick way back vai M4, up to Monmouth and Ross or another route up across via Llandovery.

Any recommendations for some gentle laning in the area? Ideally looking for an hour or two off road, preferably good scenery, water crossings always enjoyed, but nothing too extreme - will have a car full of young children!

Any suggestions appreciated.

I don't think there's a lot left down that way but maybe someone more up to date with things will have some ideas :)

loads of lanes near Llandovery worth a visit! ;)

if your after water crossings, the ford at Garth is always fun.

this is a great mid Wales byway. if you drive it from the Eastern end, then you end up on a nice ford at the base of a big dam.

you could then head North and snake your way around the reservoir on another byway. a bit of a boring lane, but leads nicely onto strata florida.

on the link below is the ford at Garth, the byway north of it is also pretty good.

Isn't that Monks Trod? It's been closed since as long as I can remember :?

no Jim, monks trod heads East from the top of the byway that snakes around the reservoir. rather than turning right at monks trod, which you quite rightly said is closed to vehicles, keep going straight on, and strata florida isnt far away.

The track straight on at claerwn isnt marked as a byway or lane?

Excellent
Am planning to do dam lane in a few weeks time
so that ucr is a good link

at the far northen end of the byway that snakes around the reservoir, it ends at a farm. about half a mile further on down the track, it turns into a UCR, right where the turn off for monks trod is.

so there is a section of about half a mile that isnt shown on OS maps as having vehicular rights. but i like many others have driven it for years without issue. its most likely an error on the maps. :)

The arrow doesn't seem to point to anything specific Andy but assuming you mean what's shown as a BOAT just south of that, yes we've driven it many times and it's a very nice lane but sadly only a very short section at the eastern end is still a BOAT and the remainder has been downgraded to a footpath so it can't be driven any more. AFAIK the BOAT north west of that is still open and worth a drive.

Thanks guys for the feedback, ended up sticking to tarmac this time doing a round about route down to Brecon, Carmarthen, to a beach near Pembrey and then back up to Cardigan via St Clears and Whitland and back via Newcastle Emlyn, Lampeter, Llandovery, Fish and Chips in Brecon and home for 9.15pm.

A long day, covered a lot of ground, but beautiful scenery and we will be going back soon to do some laning as well.

thanks for info Jon

yes i meant the Glyndwrs way BOAT that goes over Penycrocbren
shame its been downgraded...
i had checked it on trailwise and no restriction indicated

trailwise suggests the bit of monks trod Ben refers to is TRO though

i had also planned to do the other lane you mention, Alderhosan - so good to hear its worth it

I wouldn't recommend the ORPA north west of the Aberhosan lane, that one is quite tight and washed out, or was a few years ago when we last drove it. The two ORPA north of Aberhosan are ok, the first is just a farm track with a small ford and the more northerly one a bit tight for roof tents but they might fit.

seems this it isnt legal to drive this bit of lane

the owners of Llanerchinda B&B still mark every ones maps up showing that section of track as being drivable. there very knowledgeable guys and are members of all the various green lane associations. they also attend all the local council meetings and fight to keep the lanes open.

ive used that section of track for years, as it is a nice link between the lane that ends at the bottom of the dam, and the northern end of strata.

and i will continue to use it.

Correct, it is not a legal ROW all the way around. It is only legal till you get to the private with the ford next to it. From that point till just before it meets Monks Trod there is no legal ROW for motors or motor bikes.
