JB, I appreciate that its maybe too late now, but metal spraying and/or building up with weld and then machining these days are a last resort. Why didn't your man try some SKF Speedi-Sleeves? In fact he still can.
I was wary about these at first but I have seen them used not only on drive shafts but also a crankshaft journal oil seal (GM 6 cylinder). They are put on with something like Loctite bearing fit and they seem to last a very long time.

My one-man-band Toy man in Bosnia used to use the 'gold' version on outer axle seals, otherwise the standard version elsewhere.
