I know plenty of expats with UK plates who return to UK as well as myself.
MOT no problem if you have an appointment, though I know of people who have been stopped and just given the usual ticket to produce docs in 5 days, with no requirement to show an 'appointment' for a test.
Yes insurance is a must but not a temporary one issued in Europe, which are easy to acquire, it must be from a UK registered insurance company (for UK plates) which would naturally be linked to the national database.
I know a fellow who returned from Spain on UK plates but with insurance from Spain and he was done from camera evidence.
>From my own bad experiences with insurance for my Vanuatu plates, when one looks at the UK laws on insurance they reflect the fact that we are more of an island banana republic than part of Europe !
