Spare Front Hub?

Hi,
Do any of you have a spare front hub lying around for Chas' car? The existing one is too damaged to put back on, I've tried the guys that are breaking them on ebay, but without much luck and the new ones are around 170.

Julian,
Sorry, can't help with a new hub, but I would be interested to know
how and why it broke.

Hi Roman,
The day before it fell off, I had been driving some very rocky tracks in
North Wales, but wasn't aware of any severe bangs, I was driving slowly, all
I can assume is it got damaged there and failed the next day.
The end of the stub axle looked as if it had melted and the metal around the
bearing was blue where I think it had got so hot the axle just gave way, in
fact when I got out of the car the grease coming from end of the axle was
burning
I had felt the brakes pulling gently to the right on light pressure and then
to the left as I increased the pedal pressure and just before the final
failure the car started weaving as if I had a puncture then the wheel
disappeared into the distance, all this happened in a very short space of
time.

Chas,
You're lucky guy! I've seen an accident when a rear wheel came off at
80mph. There was very little of the car worth picking up!
Did something got seized due to insufficient lubrication, or you lost
the splines?

Hi,
I'm still slightly puzzled by it myself.
It appears that either the wheel bearings loosened off very quickly (they were checked a fortnight before) or there was a problem with the stub axle.
The wheel fell off about 15 months ago and the knuckle was rebuild (along with the other side) however when checked last summer it was evident that no grease had been put in the CV or the bearings.
I stripped and rebuilt the knuckles replacing all the CVs, bearings, seals etc. I didn't bother replacing the hubs or stub axles because surprisingly there wasn't excessive wear or discolouration from overheating.
I have been doing bits and bobs on the car over the last couple of months and when jacking the front up there was never any noticeable movement from the wheel bearings when checked.
Looking at the remains the CV looks as though it twisted or stretched apart rather than shear - both ends are conical in shape.
The insides of the hub are worn from the hub nuts where they have come loose and I am assuming the bearings have separated and the hub rested and rotated on the nuts.
The whole hub obviously got very hot (it caught fire), but it wasn't from lack of grease, it was well packed last summer and there was still some in the hub.
I have wondered if the star washer failed causing the hub nuts to loosen - I have seen the internal tab on the star washers getting worn, although canvasing a few other people they haven't come across this.
I have also wondered about issues with the stub axle having heard of others having problems with the Milner stub axles.

I'm wondering if just the action of tightening up the outer hub nut is
enough to wear the tab off.
Either that or the just the vibrations and pressure are causing the hub
nuts to loosen taking the tabbed washer with it.
I'm going to be checking a couple more 80s where I have used the Milner
washers, etc in the next week or two so will see if there are any issues
there.
