hi all, well today i went to fit my nato hitch and i couldn't get my spare wheel down, the hoist is locked up solid, so i stripped the thing and set about repairing / fixing
i used a trolley jack under my spare and took out the 4 bolts holding the hoist to the member and lowered the whole lot to the ground,
never stripped one before so trial and error
the front slot which we all fit our extended jack handle into seems to run to the opposite side, on closer inspection the end is bevelled over with a press or hammer
this is the key to stripping me thinks
see these 6 holes , three on each side, drill out the centre one on both sides, use a centre punch and tap out the old rivets that hold the chain guard in place, you have to remove this to drop out the centre wheel
you will have to unhook this old spring and fold up out of the way
now you can pull out the chain guard
with the guard hanging, fit the cranking end of the hoist into the vice and using a small grinding wheel ( goggles and safety glasses please) grind off the sides of the center pin head so it looks like this
now using a round bar, drive the pin out the other side
mine was tight and this seems to have been my problem, the main shaft through the middle was rusty and binding up
so i cleaned up the shaft with emery cloth, bit of grease and fitted in to the wheel again, this was a lot better.
give this a good clean and grease up
you now want to lay out your hoist like this for assembly just watch you have not twisted the chain, this is your chance to straighten it out.
note the way the plate sits there is the hole for the spring, you just put this back into the carrier, the pin when pushed back in will have to be rotated as it sits in a cam off set, just rotate and it will drop back in.
now slide the chain guard up the chain to fit back into the carrier
if you left the old rivets in, remove them now with a pair of pliers
match the two piece and rivet them together.
now back to the main pin.
now this might seem a bit odd, i could have put this in to the lathe and turned a groove for the cir-clip but a lot of you wont have one, so i used a hacksaw and cut a shallow groove, blade flat to the carrier face
used a 12.5 cir clip i think this is how you measure these, im using a drill measure for reference
fitted cir-clip
now just give it a turn in your hands, it should rotate with a bit of friction as its now well greased
now refit to your truck
my hoist is well greased as you can see in some of the pics, so the grease is not getting to the main parts so i think this will be a maintenance or fix job for some out there.
hope this helps you out,
edited, many thanks
