Spares chest - quick survey

Hello all,
I've done all the maintenance work reasonably required before
disappearing into the black hole of North-West Africa and hoping to
re-emerge unscathed a month later. There is, however, the nagging
thought that not everything will go according to plan and some spares
may be needed. This subject may have been raised already but I'd still
want to sound your opinion:
- what are the useful spares to carry with me to keep the '92
Landcruiser 80 1HD-T machanically sound?

Roman,
Belts, bulbs, hoses, a CV joint and swivel seals (Land Rover one shot swivel
grease is useful), wheel bearing kit, wiperblade, prop UJ and and and from
here on it depends on your budget, we put spares kits together for clients
based on their budget and their ability to repair the vehicle. Only take the
items that will prevent you from keeping moving. Take a look at
www.britishexpeditionvehicles.co.uk you may find it useful. Ed

Hi Guys,
This is your classic 'boys own adventure' topic! Here's what I'm taking
on this coming trip (bearing in mind that it's a 4 week trip to Mauri
and not a 6 monther across Africa):
2x fan belts
spare oil, fuel (2 off) and air filters (foam)
filter oil
rad hoses
rad hose clips
chemical metal
a change of oil and some for topping up
5 litres of EPX 80/90
set of front wheel bearings
front swivel seal kit
a bunch of spare fasteners of the appropriate thread pitch!
Some spare fuel hose
Spare bulbs (not that I drive at night except in Europe)
Spare fuses, scotchlocks, wire, terminal blocks, bullets connectors,
cable ties, mechanoser ties and the like
Radiator and oil filler caps
Sump plug and washer
A few spare wheel nuts (you can lose them in the sand and they even get
nicked - just look at any car in Lagos!!)
Superglue!
Moly and Lithium greases
2 tyres (of course :))
Im also contemplating a spare propshaft UJ and a starter relay - but
being born in Yorkshire and bred in Scotland, I probably wont bother!
Anyway, that's my two pennorth.
Cheers,
Andy

what will break! Ed

All the spanners you would need to do a knuckle rebuild... And some more. As
you may know we had to replace the inner axle oil seal on one side before
even leaving Spain...I had everything except the 54mm but managed without,
but would like to get hold of one. Seemed to cover alll needs, except fort a
few screwdrivers.
Lots to say about the kit we took as we got it about right except we never
used sand ladders (no surprise there I guess) or the dre4aded hi-lift jack
but at least I was able to hide them away but resented carrying all that
weight there and back for nothing...
Most useful items were definitely compressor, mini draper shovel, folding
German army shovel, gaffer tape (otherwise known as Duck tape)
Jeremy
PS I know you asked about tools

My previous answer was aimed at TOOLS not SPARES...
Andy's list below is good and our recent trip, once we had dealt with the
seal, I only used tools to do two oil and filter changes and to grease front
swivels and cvs. Squezzing grease into the front swivels is quickest and
easiest using old, big tooth paste tubes, suiitably washed out, and they fit
nicely into the holes once the plug is removed with a 12mm spanner.... Saves
getting a grease gun out... Did other routine stuff ie check wheel nuts etc
but had no other probs except for a cracked and leaking windscreen.
More to come. Just back in London after a week to recover from long drive
home
Jeremy

Jeremy,
Instead of using tooth paste tubes drill and tap the plug for a
grease nipple, makes it even easier.
Regards, Clive.

Don't forget to also pack spare lock washers for the front hubs - they
have a nasty habit of the tabs snapping if you re-use old ones.
Front & rear prop UJ's and starter contacts should be on the list as
well IMHO.
Best Regards,
Jon.
