Split charging works!

Hi all,
As I was going away for a month I left my LC in a secure car park.
Secure or not, I preferred the alarm to be switched on. Upon returning
to the car I found the main batteries were nearly flat - the starter
solenoid would not even make a clicking sound.
It was late in the evening and not a soul in sight to help me jump the
starter from a spare battery (let alone two batteries in series!)
Option one - a long walk home to try again in the morning. Option two
- flick a switch on the dashbard to connect two spare DMS Red Top 30
batteries, start engine, drive home. Presto!
After wiring up my Hellroaring split charging system I ran only a
basic test on it. Now I am satisfied it works as promised.

Roman,
That must have been a relief but should the batteries have lasted a few
weeks without problems? Can you give details when you're settled in at home
on your split charging conversion?

They were drained by the alarm system, something you wouldn't notice
if you use the car every few days.

Do you have then 4 batteries in your 80? What made you decide to add a
split charging system? I do not think the web site is up and running as yet.

I have a slightly different approach I'm still finishing - a single
110ah aux leisure battery split charged with all the accessories like
interior lights, power sockets, inverters, stereo, computer, alarm, CB
etc running off that.
I'm still in trouble if I leave the side lights on or something daft
like that but otherwise drain on the main batteries is 0.
This is a UK HDJ80 so dual batteries under the bonnet as standard which
I've left alone.

I couldn't help noticing you have pins through the bonnet to hold it
down? Where did you get them from and what model are they? I need to do
that so I can remove the centre support from behind the grill to make
space.

That's obviously a different approach. I opted for an aux battery
(which if fact is divided into two smaller batteries) and using it as
a booster battery. This also means the OEM battery setup is left
alone. There are sttil more combinations possible.
