stainless steel exhaust, 3"

Has anyone fitted a stainless steel 3" exhaust with 3 boxes as opposed to just
2? Wondered if they were significantly quieter than 2 silencers and had still
boasted power improvements.
Thanks

Jeremy,
Why don't you shorten the exhaust pipe, making the exit in front of
the rear wheel, with just one silencer box? It's a lot easier to
fabricate. I've seen this setup on several LC's and it did not sound
significantly louder. Hence I assume three boxes wouldn't make a real
difference either.
The silencer boxes are reusable as they seem to last a long while,
only the welding where the pipes is attached are prone to rust.

Hi Jeremy
The less boxes the less restriction you have for the gases leaving the
engine.
The less restriction you have the turbo is supposed to perform better.
I would think if you had no boxes it would be loude and if you had 3 it may
be quitier but by how much I dont know.
A guy who has not posted for a good while (gareth) has the 3" SS exhaust
with two boxes I think and it does sound a bit louder .
cheers

I remember Gareth mentioning his ss exhaust with 2 boxes and that it was a
little noisier. Like most of us, I wouldn't mind a bit more power and as much
turbo response as possible without an intercooler but would still like to be
able to listen to music if possible. I pity drivers of LR Defenders and even
Discovery drivers with all that din at motorway speeds. The only time they're
quiet is when their owners have a spaner in their hands. Which I suppose is
quite often if you think about it...

Hi Jeremy,
Gareth wasn't admitting that his exhaust was louder - it was me
complaining that it sounded like a John Deere!
I think the problem with Gareth's exhaust is they may have chosen the
wrong boxes.
One of the main problems with the standard exhaust is the restrictions
from the first big box in the system. One cheap option is to take this
out and replace it with a straight through pipe, something that others
have done.

Thanjks Julian - hope all well with you and the family.
I know it is a little deja vu all this as the topic has been exhausted (!) over
the years but I'm keen to have a set of pipes that will last, give me that
little bit more wellie and allow me a little P&Q as I head off into the winter
sunshine.
I'm sure I'll do something soon and it will be a wonderful mix of all the advice
from the list!

Hello again the guys, well I can tell you that I have that exhaust
that Roman says here on my 80. It is not louder much when you drive
gentle but when you push down hard on the mushroom the noise goes up,
like a whooosing sound. I want to put on an other silencer if I can
find it.
