Starter keeps spinning once engine is running - UPDATE

Well

He's stripped the starter, and the contacts are severely burnt.
Further investigation revealed that I had two nearly dry cells in one
battery (oh dear, bad care on my part) and this is the likely cause
because the starter will have been running with under voltage. Strange,
because I checked the level "recently", but obviously not recently
enough or carefully enough.

So no permanent damage, other than to the wallet, and hopefully problem
solved. Another lesson learned.

However moral of the story: check your batteries!
