Starter Solenoids Welding Closed and more

Hi All
So last night I replaced the starter (Milners ?175.00). Looks exactly like
the original and required two wires to be disconnected and one nut and one
bolt to be removed. Hardest part was getting the car jacked up using the
pathetic two tonne jack I bought from Halfrauds. Propped it up and removed
wheel and access was relatively straightforward. The old motor was stuck
fully extended on the spring so the contacts are welded tight. Checked over
the wiring and all seemed ok so once the new one was installed, reconnected
the bats and, with everything crossed, cranked her up....and she started
first turn!!!!! Bats were very low though so I took her for a quick livener
and all seems ok now. Total job took me just over an 1 1/2hrs. Will need
to investigate Neil's idea about breakers in the bat cables.
Next job, full service, new timing belt and have a look at the exhaust
(Renate to advise me on her Stainless non rusting wonder pipe).

Hi Simon
Seeing as how it is all fresh in your mind at the moment, would you be able
to set down the steps for replacing the motor for me the mechanic, I wish.
Also If any one has pics of whats inside a starter that would be nice. I
plan now thats a joke but you never know if the starter gives any more
hassle I want to have a look at it rather than pay a guy if I can at all.
I too am looking at the exhaust issue but I got a quote for ?500 for the
complete one in 3 inch pipe from the same guys.

Hi Roman
Little if any real car wrenching experience but when I was younger I used to
pull apart everything mechanical I could get my hands on.

Im really sorry I didn't take apart all my toys but I only had a match box
with some matches in it, now I have to start. Talking about starters again
at least on my part. I went out this AM to bring the young fella to school
and the starter screamed three times before on the forth attempt it started.
(Not now) was my reply and nothing else because of the company sitting in
the front seat looking at me for a reaction, as they do. Im off to France
first thing tomorrow and travelling through the UK and the morning before I
go my starter acts up. I went to the electic guy who said it maybe the
clutch or the ring if it is making that sound and that I will have to wing
it as he has not got the part or the time to do the job. Its early days yet
for it to pack in because only three screams is Ok for a while , wait untill
it gets to 15 or so then you know you need it fixed. I think he said. I will
do as Roman suggested (see I do take it all in ) a while back and try to
pick up a new starter from Milner. Now the thing is how to do that on my
way. Seriously anyone want some luck going really cheap today or lack of it
I should say. Now there is to be no party to celibrate me going away and
giving you lot peace for two weeks do you hear.
