A man (at a landrover show) with a very nicely expedition specced cruiser
said they (80 series diesel) don't have any glow plugs but push hot air
through the engine - is this true?

Hi Clair
AFAIK we have 6 glow plugs and hot air can only be obtained when the engine
is hot so when its cold no hot air or in my case even when the engine is hot
I get semi warm air.
cheers

Clair,
The man was right, for the 1HDFT engine at least. There is a
resistor network, or something similar, in the inlet manifold that
comes on when you start, this 'heater' does not go off with the glow
plug light but stays on for a couple of minutes to assist with the
cold running of the engine. I know when mine is on as the lights are
dimmer and the voltmeter noticeably low, the increase in brightness
and the voltmeter jump are quite noticeable. The volts increase is in
more than one step.
