Hi Guys
Could you tell me what the possible causes of play in the steering could be
apart from the steering box. and the driver being a bit drunk.
Is there any nuts, bolts, washers, bushings that could be adjusted or
replaced bearing in mind mine has no air bag.
cheers

Hi John,
There are various linkages and ball joints all that wear.
I would jack the car up, both wheels off the ground using AXLE stands, don't
rely on the jack only!!!! And try wobbling the wheels at 9 and 3 o'clock
positions as well as 6 and 12 o'clock. You're looking for 'play, slack, and
klonks'. It's a bit hard to describe. Also get someone to gently rock the
steering wheel back and forth whilst holding the wheels, and check the
linkages for play. It's a bit subjective but you should be able detect any
excessive movement.

Rob
P.s I CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH!!, do not get under the vehicle whilst only
supported on a jack!!!! GET, BORROW, or STEAL some decent, properly rated
axle stands and use them properly, on a level firm surface. Rear wheels
chocked, handbrake on etc.

Hey Rob
Thanks for the reply on this.
I could jack it up and down all day but when you dont know what to look for
, you dont know. I just thought there would be something simple, that may
stand out as being worn or needing replacement.
Is there a kit of all the bits that wear out for the steering that could be
bought.
cheers

Is it play in the steering system (turn wheel a bit before wheels start
to move) or just vague steering (wheels move right away but have to
steer a lot before car starts to turn) ?
It's worth checking because you might just have a bent steering link
throwing your tracking out which can make the steering very vague.
If it's play rather than just tracking get someone to turn the steering
wheel side to side half a turn while you look underneath for play. Often
you can't see or feel it if you jack the car up if it's not too bad.
You could also try taking up any slack in the steering box, I had to do
that on mine a couple of years ago. It's easy to do and documented in
the FSM.
Jon.

steering/ rant/

Hey Jon
Thanks for the advice on the steering.
I have a bit of play but I think its more like what you said VAGUE steering
not as responsive as it should be, not too nice on country roads when you
need the steering to be percise.
I have already asked about the damper but from what I can make out it would
seem not to be that.
My steering box is leaking and has been for years but has increased in
leakage.
So I have a new box on the way, just need someone to fit it.
Ill ask /see about the steering link but to be honest I dont know what im
looking for as regards play.
I think I would have to know what it should look like than I would know if
something is not right.
But when you dont know what things look like when they are good, makes it
harder to detect something when its wrong.
This is my usual complaint when it comes to diagnosing problems with the
cruiser, I either dont know or I dont know, either way im knacked unless I
have sonmeone to show me which I dont.
Its a good job I dont mind expressing my lack of mechanical ability to you
guys or I could get imbarrested. But not me , if I dont ask I cant learn so
i dont care how much of an ass I have to make of myself to get to the
answers.
One recent example was this crap with my brakes and discs and calipers and
it not feeling right, the hub heating up and the scretching sound from the
rear brake/caliper.
I had a guy look at it three times and ended up with new calipers , new
discs, new pads and still scretching and hot hub (not tub).
Well I had a look and the new brake shoes were too tight and causing heat to
built up.
Next problem how to adjust the shoes, that was fine cause as usual a few
guys from the list sent me the how to do it list.
Which is fine untill I went to do it and then had to find the hole and when
found to adjust the shoes.
But even though I found the hole in the hub I didn't know what I was
supposed to see in the hole.
Which was nothing at all, just black nothingness.
It took a while untill I could see that I could rotate the hub and guessed
maybe the hole was in the wrong place to see what ever I was suppossed to
see in there.
It took more time and more time untill I saw bits in there and experimented
by poking a screwdriver in there.
I eventually hit the cog to adjust the shoes which for others that dont
know or am I the only one, is at the bottom.
So you spin the hub untill the hole is at the bottom then poke in your
screw driver.
I then had to test to see what happened when I poked in there with the screw
driver, praying all the time that i dont f--- up something important.
I eventually found that i could click it up or down, so now what way
tightens it and loosens it. UP to tighten and down to loosen.
I found out and now its history.
Another job I can do for myself.
I know you didn't want to hear all this crap but I just wanted to point out
to you all who know already how to do things that it can be quite difficult
to do what you would concider easy jobs. And all because to know is better
then not to know, and sometimes to try is better than to let some YARIS guy
work on your cruiser, but only if it all works out fine.
So its not that we if there is a we, lack anything other than the
knowledge.
Although some times I think it is just me who has issues with the cruiser or
every one else can fix it themselves.
Ah thats it, im the only mechanically challanged guy in the whole world.

Hi guys
Maybe one can get used to the little quirks of your own vehicle but when I got it back the steering wheel seems to have a little play in it.
By that I mean it will move up and down in place but is accurate while on the road.
Is there a bearing or washer that can wear, is it a case of live with it.
cheers
