Sunday in BBNPA

Peter,
Another trip to Wales ?..... in Nov ?... with the water ?.... and the
obvious risks involved ?
YES PLEASE !!... count me in.
What a great day Sunday was, brilliantly executed and organised by your good
self.
GPS, Maps, CB, Great communication, excellent route and timing, A great
crowd and recovery for all, it was a real pleasure and we loved it. It is
such a shame we will lose the right to enjoy a drive like this due to the
selfishness of others.
What really surprised me was how hard walking must be as a hobby. The trail
bikers all waved and smiled and opened gates etc, the other guys in the Land
rovers looked happy, the Framer on his Quad, but all the walkers we passed
looked well p***ed off.
It must be the terrain or the whole grain dehydrated food ??
Cheers
Ade,
FJ80 4.5, 2.5 OME Lift, HF&CB, ARB, Snorkel, Breathers, and not a clue how
to drive

I wish to echo the general concensus, a great day out. Glad you got home OK
Chas, as you said that was a long and tricky tow. Thanks to Toby for the
loan of his Landcruiser while mine is having an extended stay at a garage -
long story, don't ask. I have added some pictures to Peters thread on

Hey Chas
Ah now I see the problem you got yourself into.
I must make a mental note not to follow the fella with the sign on his rear
window I can go anywhere.
Same colour cruiser as mine apart from the muddy colour.
Hopefully the starter will keep up its good behavier for you.
Its a good job you have the snorkel or you may have real trouble.

Well normally Cruisers can go anywhere but there's an exception to every rule, but to see an, I think impressive, Cruiser feat look at this link, http://www.youtube.com/p.swf?video_id=3D1nwTPEZtLoA&eurl=3D&iurl=3Dhttp://sjl-st

This was obviously taken before the ducking, it's not a very good quality
clip, the original is but it lost some in the transfer to Youtube.

Hi Guys
A while back Julian advised me on what to do to correct the vibrations i am
having when the cruiser is put into drive.
I either deleted it or filed it somewhere so safe now I cant even find it.
Something at the rear of the injector pump to adjust the fuel intake, it even had a name.
Could someone please remind me what i am looking for, (is it a nut, screw),
and where it is or if someone has a pic that would be even nicer.
I have reached the end with the vibrations and either I can correxct it or
ill have to bring it back to the pump guy who fixed it.
I would like to avoid doing the latter as its a good two hour drive each way.
cheers

Hi John,
Here is the original message:
It's called the load volume screw and is from memory positioned just
above the point at the back of the pump where the fuel is distributed
to the injectors.
The screw has a 6mm hex head as well as a flat cut in it for a
screwdriver and is locked by a 12mm nut (hidden from view).

ISTR that you turn it clockwise to increase the fueling and
anticlockwise to reduce the fueling. Only adjust in 1/4 or 1/8 of a
turn increments and make a note of exactly what changes you make each
time so that you can keep track of it.
Typically your engine will require 13-14 cc of fuel for each squirt at
around 2000rpm - half a turn on the Load Volume Screw is equivalent to
3cc of fuel - so the key is to only do very small turns at a time.

I suggest that you tweak it, then take it for a run up a local hill
watching carefully for smoke out the back and then tweak again until
you strike the balance of a little bit of smoke under hard acceleration
or driving up hill, but nothing noticeable when driving normally on the
flat.

If you don't get the 90 degree exhaust pipe at the back it will be
difficult to spot without someone driving behind you monitoring it.

Another thing to note, you obviously need to do the smoke test when the
engine is warm and also you may well find that the tickover revs
increase a bit as the engine becomes properly fuelled.

A local injection company actually suggest intially adjusting the
fuelling to the point where the tickover has risen to it's highest
point and then work from there to adjust for smoke.

Generally whiteish smoke means under fuelling and black smoke indicates
over fuelling.

Also note, when you do the adjustment, hold the LV screw tightly in
position when you tighten up the locking nut, otherwise it will move.

Got home safely - realised there is quite a bit of damage on the step,
driver side, but not to worry, I'm not fussed about that. The gearbox got a
hell of a lot of stick; so far it seems to be working okay, but I am worried
that it has sustained damage, the starter motor got some stick too, and the
bone-shaking felt as if l'beast would start breaking up, so I'm just waiting
and hoping l'beast hasn't sustained any serious, long-lasting damage,
because if it has, I'm going to be asking for some considerable help with
mending it from a few of you! So I hope you won't mind this?, and by the
way, I'm not regretful of the day, nor am I blaming any of you - I wasn't
expecting the day to pan out the way it did, because if I had known, I
wouldn't have done it!
A good day methinks, but totally unexpected - I did it with no RR-FR diff
which some said I couldn't do the gap without it, but just to prove them
wrong...I did it.
The damage that Clive thought was due to nose-ending into the stream bit was
old damage, so don't worry about that Clive.
Thanks Pete, for a good day
Regards
Renate

Many thanks to all those tha came along and made it such an enjoyable day
out. Hopefully the "eventful" end to the day didn't dampen the enthusiasm?
I found the trip VERY enjoyable as did SWMBO and the rest of my brood, the
Gap was a bit more slippery than it was last week and was quite
"interesting". It's a damn shame that we've now almost certainly lost this
fantastic lane for good!!
I'd be very greatful if all those taking part could give me feedback with
their honest opinions of the day? Good points, bad points, was the day too
long, was the nature of the day what you expected, or better, or worse, etc.
Would you come along on any future trips? I can use the information to
improve the planning of any future trips.
For those that don't yet know, I managed to get Chas' LC started again just
after 8pm and I've heard that he then got home safely and without further
drama just after 10. He now just has to get it dried out again!!
I haven't heard from Renate yet but I'm assuming she got home OK?
My thanks to Adrian, Mark and John for pulling my Cruiser "back from the
brink" as it were!!
My thanks also to Ian for recovering Chas' crippled Cruiser back to
civilisation.
Andrew (not LC nor ELCO) blew a head gasket just outside Merthyr and was
unable to join us. I've heard that the RAC got him home OK.
Once again, many thanks to one and all.

I couldn't download the .mov clips, and same with the links and things - my
connection is an ancient dial-up one that takes about 3 hrs to download 3
mbs of info...
I did try to access but got a blurred image and then the laptop ceased, I
rebooted and started again, after the 3rd time I couldn't be asked to do it
again!
That's why I said that I wasn't blaming anyone, and I don't hold any
grudges, but I might want help from you guys if things go AWOL with l'beast.
Serious and more extreme?! a joke methinks...;-)
And no, mi RR-FR diff has NEVER worked! the guy who had l'beast before me
(a sheep farmer in wales...)had the diff looked at on three separate
occasions, but it couldn't be sorted, so there you have it - no RR-FR diff,
just Central.

Peter,
Another trip to Wales ?..... in Nov ?... with the water ?.... and the
obvious risks involved ?

I'm thinking of organising another green laning day later this year before
the RUPPs finally close in Wales. End of this month or early November.
I'm thinking maybe Strata Florida area. Strata Florida (West Wales) is a
fantastic and long lane with many water crossings, although they can get
quite deep after very wet weather so we'll have to plan accordingly nearer
the time. Lots of other lanes in the area at the moment. The trip will not
be as dramatic as last Sunday in terms of the terrain but the scenery in the
area is, if anything even more stunning.
As the days are getting short it will mean an early start and a
correspondingly early finish. I would aim to meet at Brecon around 8 a.m.
The trip will be limited to 6 vehicles (me + five others).
Who would, in principle, be up for it?

Hi Guys
A while back Julian advised me on what to do to correct the vibrations i am
having when the cruiser is put into drive.
I either deleted it or filed it somewhere so safe now I cant even find it.
Something at the rear of the injector pump to adjust the fuel intake, it
even had a name.
Could someone please remind me what i am looking for, (is it a nut, screw),
and where it is or if someone has a pic that would be even nicer.
I have reached the end with the vibrations and either I can correxct it or
ill have to bring it back to the pump guy who fixed it.
I would like to avoid doing the latter as its a good two hour drive each
way.
cheers

Subject: Re: [ELCO] injector pump

Hi John,
