Hi all,
Firstly, a Happy New Year to everyone. I've made my only NY resolution
to lurk less on this board amnd talk/ask more.
I've justy got back from a trip with the kids around France and Germany
in my FZJ80 - which was great. Only problem was the sunroof started to
drive me potty with rattling. I know it's not a very exciting thing to
ask about and I should really be asking how to connect a hydraulic winch
or something but I vaguely remember some talk of 'shimming' the sunroof
to stop these rattles. Has anyone actually done this? Did you need to
get special parts? Also the tilt button on the sunroof has stopped
working (carbon bit on the back of the rubber button is no more) as I'm
way to cheap to buy a new switchpack, does anyone have a suitable bodge tip?
Promise to ask something more exciting next time!
Btw, 'cos of the cold weather in europe, my LPG performance was lousy
(the 72 litre tank would only empty (and therefore take) 28 litres) so
there was a lot of filling up. The tank is under the car and I wondered
about ducting some warm air (from the cab or engine bay) onto the tank
to warm it up a bit. Are there any options on whether this is likely to
be safe?!!
Best,
Andy

Andy,
Your gas tank surprises me. Propane freezes at minus 40-ish degrees and
I doubt if the weather was that cold. Could be that you need a tank
regulator with a higher thoughput rate.

I was wondering about that too. I've had problems with butane on cold days, but not propane.
Don't LPG conversions use (hot) coolant to vaporise the gas? Could it be worth checking that bit of the system out to make sure that it is getting heat?
On the subject of a safe working temperature for LPG tanks: well, the Ozzies use them in the desert, so 40+ deg C must be regarded as normal. A quick web search turned up this http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg387.pdf which suggests that temps up to 40 C (in a paint shop baking oven) do not require any special precautions. So I'd guess that it would be impossible to overheat things just by ducting hot air from the engine, and a max/min thermometer (or a digital one with a remote thermocouple, around =A310 on Ebay) would allow you to measure the temp and give you confidence.
On the subject of sun-roofs: mine rattles too, especially in v. cold weather and when I've been going over bumpy tracks. Opening it fully and then closing it again tends to shut it up for a bit, but I'd be interested in a fix if anyone has one.
