SVO and Tesco

Julian if you think I have a cheek then please delete this post, no
offence meant.
I appreciate some of you are using SVO regularly, so I was interested
in this posting on the Pajero owners club site last week, and thought
you addicts might be interested. It refers to the Tesco Port Solent
branch near Portsmouth.

Well today I went to tesco and loaded my trolley up with 20 bottles
of veg for use in the paj hopefully tomorrow. Just finished loading
when the shop manager came over and told me to put it all back except
5. I argued with the manager who said they have a bulk buy policy
and I said no one said anything for the last 9 mths why now. Anyways
to my surprise I found 2 security guards appear out of nowhere and I
was escorted from building and car park.
Got on the main road to find 2 police cars and a customs inspect van
waiting just for me. Turns out tesco had called the police on me
because I was after the oil for fuel in the car.
Told the coppers to dip the tank, all they found was diesel, 65lts of it!

Following this posting there has been a strong interest in the club
for trade cards for Makro/Costco/cash and carry outlets ! Other
members have reported a strange coincidence of similar incidents
near Tesco stores. Some have also reported the ease of downloading
the Customs application form from the official website, which is easy
to complete and mail-in to them so that the 47p a litre duty for SVO
use can be extracted from the users on a monthly basis.
Well, I thought it was interesting anyway.

Interesting ... As someone said: "Tesco: every little hurts!"
I suppose their lawyers would say that if they knowingly allowed you to
put untaxed fuel in your tank they would be compounding a felony.

It was Tesco's a short while ago that reported someone for having
pics. of a deer he had shot developed in their store. The deer was
entirely legal but Tesco seem to be on a 'guilty until proven
innocent' policy. Unless it's 'we are more important than you'.

Incredible!
So what this tax is levied on? Surely not on fuel because veg oil is
not just fuel. Shouldn't it be called "mobility tax"?
2 police cars and a customs inspect van? Shouldn't govenment transport
be taxed higher to prevent the waste of fuel such as this?

Well well Its really a case of its only good for the environment if you pay
for it and if you dont pay the tax its better to use the stuff that polutes.
It always comes down to money in the end on both sides.

Jon, et al
Okay I know its wasting good diesel (!), but you could maybe, do a few
litres at asda, then a few at sainsbury's and five at tesco, maybe a few
from morrisons...maybe a few at somerfield (if these supermarkts exists in
you necks of the woods) or some other local supermarkt to that area.
A mate of mine used to buy veggie oil, but he was only buying a five-ltr
container of it at a time, he got away with buying another 5-ltr too on one
occasion but then his car was a write-off (it wasn't a cruiser, just an old
vauxhall thingy).

Hi All,
What is the correct percentage Diesel/SVO to use? I'd like to know before I
empty out the back of the Cruiser and pop round to all the local
supermarkets

Ray I don't want to perpetuate this, but your comment is similar to
others I have read elsewhere. It appears that notwithstanding the
current confusion within the Customs, there are two rates. That above
is for used (pre-fried?) SVO. The higher rate is for new unused oil
which was the subject of my posting. But there are some real experts
here who will write far more about it than me.
One interesting point, I see that the proposed meeting in London is
behind a Tesco ! Naughty boys be aware.

Hi Jon,
Predominantly you either have SVO (Straight Vegetable Oil) or WVO
(Waste Vegetable Oil).
You can put SVO into your diesel LC mixing it anywhere from 10% to
100%, although for the latter you are advised to run it a bit like an
LPG converstion, starting on diesel and then switching over when warmed
up, also you would need either an in line heater or a tank heater.
WVO generally gets converted to BioDiesel using a chemical process
called estrification (I think, can't remember the details) - with
Biodiesel you don't need to do any conversion work, except possible on
older vehicles (pre-1990) that might have problems with rotting fuel
lines - Biodiesel can be quite caustic and does a good job of cleaning
your fuel lines.
You can also make biodiesel out of SVO or rape oil, etc.
On the tax side in the UK, whatever you put in to your tank to power
your car you have to pay tax on, period - the Chancellor has to get his
stealth tax in some where.
At the moment I believe that the rate of tax varies according to the
type of fuel and ISTR that good old eco friendly Biodiesel and SVO is
taxed at the same rate as normal diesel.
If you are filling your tank yourself with SVO or Biodiesel you need to
declare the quantities, etc and make sure you pay your dues.
I buy my Biodiesel from a chap who makes it locally and he handles the
tax side of things for me, so as long as I keep my receipt as proof I
should be OK.
