Kirk,
If you examine Toyota worldwide they have put most of their
engines in to most of the range. The 78 troopy is fitted with the 4.2,
or can be.

On reflextion I realise that the swb I am refering to was not an 80 but it was definitely badged on the rear as a 4.2 turbo VX. Did they make any of the 70 series with a 4.2 engine.

Kirk, the only 4.2 I have come across in 70's is the non turbo 1HZ,
but it seems ubiquitous, but there again it may be because I have
only worked with more specialist versions on the LWB chassis. Or to
put it another way, I have only seen the smaller 4 cylinder engines
in the consumer market type SWB's, often with the canvas tilt. The
4.2 would be used in SWB's sold into more commercial markets, but
very popular for tough going. The military 70's I have seen - mostly
with various military/peacekeeping forces - are almost exclusively
LWB and always sounded as if they had 6 cylinders. HTH
