The Budget - G Brown at it again

I was checking ceefax this morning - something came up about G Brown wanting
to tax us even more! At least 400GBpounds per year for gas guzzlers.
Gas guzzlers are defined as those big-engined brutes with V8 engines, 5
maybe 6 litres arn't they? The ones that do 4 miles an hour an use zillions
of litres like the hummers arn't they?
Seems ours might still fall within less gas guzzlers as I still get at 55.8
mph 26.3 miles per gallon.
But methinks he don't care about us 4x4'ers and it really p****s me off!
You don't need to respond obviously!.
just my 2 cents worth

According to The Times this only applies to vehicles bought new since last April - they were very emphatic about this. (See http://business.timesonline=2Eco.uk/tol/business/economics/budget_2007/article1533942.ece)

So unless you've been splashing out you should be (relatively) safe!

[ELCO] The Budget - G Brown at it againChris
I wish! (minus the added expense, of new car tax rules that is!) it would
have to be white, the usual mods, some additonal ones, a double spare-wheel
carrier, maybe an intercooler....
I wonder why I thought it would apply across the board? this was mentioned
before, wasn't it? last year methinks? maybe he's "underlining the need to
be more environmentally friendly" as their last ditch attempt to get the
vote....

Ah lads
You have it easy in the UK regarding road tax.
Over here it is 1360 euro road tax per year for the cruiser over 3 times the
cost of the insurance premium, so how is that for a rip off.
I had a usefull thing I downloaded from some official Uk Tax and Emissions
chart which compared all the vehicles and their Co2 emissions
It was interesting because I think just going on memory which is not
reliable at all but I think the 1.2 litre car produced about half of what
the cruiser 4.2 produced.
Now as I say dont hold me to that and I cant find that chart, another thing
filed away on the PC too well.
I asked several poltitians why we pay so much and they said because the
cruiser produces so much emissions.
When i explained it produced about twice the average car and why then do we
pay 4 or 5 times that cars tax and not twice to correspond with the twice
emissions and then I would say things like a large motor bike uses as much
fuel as the cruiser but yet only pays about 25 euro road tax per year, they
were eager to move on and could not explain such imbalanced taxes.

Can't find the figures for mine, they only seem to go back to 1997. See http://www.smmtco2.co.uk/co2search2.asp or alternatively http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/search/search.asp for new cars.

But a 1997 - 2001 Amazon 100 series 4.2 litre diesel scores 340g/km auto, and 292g/km manual. (The V8 auto petrol is 393g/km)

Current Euro all-new-car average is about 165g/km, with a supposed target of 130g/km by 2012.

So "twice the average" is about right. I hope you are eating lots of vegetables, recycling everything, living under very dim lights and thinking lots of green thoughts to make up for it all!

Incidentally my 80 series gets through about 1950 litres of diesel in covering its 12,000 annual miles.
My central heating tank gets through about 5000 to 5500 litres of kerosene to heat the house in a typical year.

Houses use more than cars.

Hey Christopher
Did you happen to see the documentary on Channel 4 last week I think which
talked about the scam about global warming and us being to blame for the
whole thing, it would make you think twice.

John

No I didn't. But I'm definitely a believer that it is caused by us - I think the correlation between CO2 levels in the atmosphere and global temperature is too good to be ignored.

In my view it doesn't really matter what the cause is, what's more important is what we do about it.

But I don't really want to get into discussing such an emotive subject on this forum.

I think it's more akin to the convention "don't discuss politics or religion in the officers' mess" - something not restricted either to to this country or this (or indeed the last) century. Good sense, not political correctness.

Hi John
Sounds just like our politicans over here! Its an unfair world tis true and
last MOT I had my emissions test (they do it 6 times) revving like hell into
the red zone and it still was well within current emissions ruling - so, I
ask them, why are we charged so much when actually, a reasonably maintained
older diesel is, on my reckoning, pretty economomical - they look at me,
narrowing their eyes, fall over a load of words to try and justify their
current legislations, make excuses that are not at all convincing - then
they wonder why I don't vote for them!
Cheers

Yeah I saw this too - its why I watched it - In doing a bit of my own
research, the figures don't add up, and anyway, I know that the current
trend for 'global warming' is on the up naturally - and its been supported
by sea bed sediment core samples off West Africa, and the Greenland Ice
cores - not only this, its cyclic and happens every 1500 - 2000 years - cold
snaps, warm snaps and then the whole cycle begins again - its been this way
since well before man looked out of his cave for the very first time time.
I still think people need to take more responsibility for living a more
greener lifestyle, and I also think loads more can be done so we all live
more cleaner, more environmentally friendly lives, but there seems to be far
too much scaremongering and scapegoating going on.
