ticking

Hi guys
I was at toyota today and they told me that the ticking is coming
from the exhaust valves through the turbo.
the other thing is that they changed the alternator but the gouge
steel does not come up at once when cold
but stays right in the middle line. I have to drive some kmrs
before it goes up and that was the same with the
old alternator :-((((((((((Is that right?
Otherwise always look at the bright side of life
Cheers

Lubo,
A low voltage reading when cold is perfectly normal with the 1-hdft
engine. Remember - we do not have heater plugs to pre heat the cold air
prior to starting. Our engines rely purely on compression to generate
sufficient heat. The initial low voltage is due to the high current draw
- 30 amps - of the air screen heater situated in the inlet manifold.
This will operate whe the engine is cold, as soon as the engine warms up
- it switches off and the voltmeter rises accordingly. All as designed
by a little man in Japan.
Enjoy your weekend, and give my love to those blondes

Lubo - 500 euros - for nothing - I would invoke the wrath of ODIN for
that !! Curses on those dealers for not knowing how things work.
Gareth.

Lubo,

Always ask the list first, that is something I am fast learning,
collectively there is a huge amount of experience and knowledge which people
share for free!

(PS Won=92t searchable archives be an asset to the list Julian, well they will
be if people search them)

I think it was my fault not posting my message before... now it looks
too late to quarrel with them about it
But I hope they we'll be right about those valves ;-) one of them ask
me 'what the fellows form the forum wrote about them'?

Lubo - get the old - fully working alternator - back, it is yours.
Re ticking - valve clearances - when checked last?
Be warned - great care is needed on the 24 valve engine both to check
and especially to adust the clearances. Inexperienced dealers have been
known to get things wrong and then attempt to charge the customer.
I suggest you search the Birfield archives for info - or do a google
search - 1-HDFT VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT should get you started.
BTW - I went to the Goodwood Festival of Speed last Friday, one or two
cars with no poppet valves in the engine including one of my favourites
- the Rover P6 (2000 shape) with a gas turbine engine - 15,000+ rpm and
it runs on kerosene - no engine braking though !!! I didn't see a sleeve
valve engine though - another story.
Regards Gareth.

Gareth
valve clearens was done at 136000-km according to the service book.
the 'experts' are talking about some other valves connected to the
exhaust.
I'll ask them for the old alternator otherwise i'll show them you
email and ask them why they did not know that issue :)
I have to go to playyyyyyyyyyyy
cheers

Hi Gareth
what if I show them(experts in toyota)your email and ask them for the
old alternator or money back?
they might ask who's that Gareth and how does he knows those things ?
Where did you get that info?
cheers

Hi Gareth
sorry bothering you again but can you imagine the butterflies in my
stomach if I have to deliver the car
to them for valve clearance adjustment????
cheers

Lubo, 2 beers / 1 blonde - thanks although I like to keep the ratio 1 to
1, too much beer is not good for you !!
Valve clearances - was that a cry of worry or are you asking for more
information? Let me know.
Regards Gareth.

All of them. How could I trust those guys if they beguin to screw
into the engine?
but bouth of them(the mechanichs) were ticking with their heads and
confirm that the ticking
was not form the engine valves...
just wait and see what they will found out!
cheers

Hi Gareth
the funny thing that happened yesterday was I went to a 'diesel'
service for ''second'' opinion and the guy look around , bend down on
his knees and after carefully listening consider that it was
definitely the exhaust and not the engine the ticking was coming form
and we could here it very clear(the ticking). So he advised me to go
to Toyota and tell them what he ment . I did it immediately and the
mechanic was very helpful coming almost immediately to help me but
then there was that: the ticking just disappear. We were trying hard
to here something like 'tick-tick' 'tick-tick' but nothing pure
beautiful running engine. then the guy assumed that it might come
from the exhaust valves and said even if I change them it will be the
same ....
But I'll check the car as I told you on the 08.08.and coming back to
report if you wish so :)
have i nice weekend......
cheers
