Hi Guys
I was just wondering is there a set number of times after which it is
adviceable to replace the tensioner when replacing the belt.
I ask because mine is nearly due a belt but after the last mishap of being
within a few miles of messing upthe engine because of so called metal
fatique in the tensioner.
This broke and the belt ate its way through the cover.
cheers

Last time my timing belt was changed was at 120k miles, ie its second
change, and I decided to replace the roller and tensioner as a
preventative measure. There were no symptoms of any problems, I was
just being a nervous nellie.
We had to get the bits from Toyota: they do not come as a kit and, so
far as we could make out, there was no specified schedule for replacing
them. The Toyota agent's attitude was "inspect and replace if worn".
My mechanic's comment when we were having a look at the old bits
afterwards was "well, these look absolutely fine", and to my eyes and
ears they were; but in addition he pointed out that if I trashed the
engine it would probably cost more than the vehicle is worth to fix it.
In short he didn't call me an old woman (to my face) but sort of implied
that I was a middle-aged one!
For your info the costs of the parts on 21/3/06 were (Pounds sterling,
excluding VAT)
Timing belt: 27.80
Tensioner: 43.16
Idler: 96.23
That's all I know!

Hi John,
I don't know what the official answer is, however the general advice
with other vehicles I have worked on it to replace the tensioner at the
same time as you replace the belt.
As others have said, it may well not be necessary, but if you aren't
100% of the vehicles full histonry worth doing as a precaution.

Thanks guys for the info on this.
Julian I had the tensioner replaced last time after it broke off the stupid
engine and nearly caused me to have another fit.
So its new 3 years ago and 47,000 miles ago.
cheers
