Timing on an HDJ80

Hi,
Just thought I would report back on a recent experience.
My 80 is suffering terrible fuel consumption so am investigating
various areas, including what the manual keep on pointing to - the
timing.
A number of people say that this is unlikely to be out, but since the
SST required fell out of the back of the local dealer, I thought why
not - shouldn't take too long.
Firstly, if you are going to do it yourself, you definitely need the
SST, girlie hands, stubby spanners, very long spanners and a hell of a
lot of patience.
If you have the ACSD installed, it is handy to have some hose clamps,
so that you can clamp them and move them out of the way.
It would also make sense to remove the fan, it's shroud and also the
pulley behind the fan (comes off with fan) so that you can see the
timing marks.
It is also sensible to completely undo the union for the No5 cylinder
and the one below it to fit the SST.
My plunger stroke setting came out to 1.20mm, when it should be 1.29-
1.35mm, so it does need adjusting, however I don't have a suitably long
12mm spanner to reach the engine side nut on the front of the pump so
have had to pack up to go and get one.
Fortunately knuckle damage only came to 2 minor cuts and one severe one
:)
Hopefully should get around to changing it next week, when I will
report back to see if it has made any difference.
