To Snorkel or not to?

Evening all!
'Be very grateful for all your thoughts.
I'm bringing back a few goodies from the states and I'm pondering whether I would get any real benefit from a snorkel ($305 from Slee).
As I understand it the main benefit is cooler, cleaner air (apart from the obvious water swallowing!) and getting well stressed when you realise that you have just drilled the holes in the wrong place!
I guess there are plenty of others?
On the negative side, is there alot more noise from the increased drag? Of course there is the cost and looks?
I know Roman has one fitted so I would be very grateful for all comments (almost all)
So where is the Waxoyl Gal?
Best Regards

Hello Dermot,
That's a fair description of the benefits you can get from fitting a snorkel.
That shouldn't be a problem as the paper template is pretty accurate -
you can't go wrong. There's an issue of very limited access to one of
the bolts (you need you get your hand deep into the front wing. almost
to the door hinge, only from the inside). Another point is the plastic
inserts (supplied with the Safari snorkel) you're supposed to insert
into holes drilled in the D/S A-post. I prefer stainless steel
self-clinching nuts.

Hi,
Cutting, and drilling the wing doesn't bother me, but drilling several
holes in the 'A' post does.

Picking up on the point about the A pillar mounting - the standard
Safari ones are pathetic, first time you rub a tree they rip out, mine
did. I had the dilemma of whether to re-fix poorly so easily ripped out
and minimal damage, or fix properly but risk major damage if they were
subsequently ripped out. I fixed them properly with riv nuts and have
had plenty of tests, ripping the top of the snorkel off a couple of
times now but the A post fixing has withstood it. The snorkel deforms so
much that it bends out of the way or crushes flat against the car. Just
this weekend the top section was bent over double and it just pops back
into place.
If you point the intake backwards there's a little noise but pointing
forwards I don't think there's extra noise. Can't comment on the
performance, seems about the same.
Best Regards,
Jon.

Hi Dermot,
If you are going for a Safari one, make sure that you go for what is
considered to be the Mark II design - these are slightly more bulbous
and have better air flow.
