transmission selector issue

G'day guys,

The missus and I have bought a 2005 120 Prado at the start of the year. When we bought the car, the transmission selector lights 'D' and '4' were not working on the centre console and on the instrument cluster. When I pulled apart the centre console I noticed 2 wires shielding were compromised and the copper wires were exposed and thought it may have been the 'D' and the '4' selector light wires.
I have patched it up but the lights still don't come on and I don't think it disengages the overdrive when I put it in '4' since there are no rev changes.

I was wondering if there was a short, where would it have been affected, is there a fuse somewhere?
and most importantly how do I fix the problem?
is it to do with the computer? my gut feeling is that the OD gets selected or de-selected based on the position of the gear lever on either 'D' or '4' but because of the exposed wires, it may have shorted and cause it to not work and not show the lights on the centre console and the instrument cluster.

hope this makes sense and I look forward to people's input.
