Turbo light

Hi. I'm new to the forum (Hi Roman!)
I have a 1991 HDJ80 1HD-T.
On the tachometer there is a green light that comes on when the turbo kicks in. Next to it there is a red light that does not come on unless there is a problem. In the hand book it says something like,
"the green light comes on to indicate the turbo is operating correctly. The red light indicates there is a problem" But it does not say any more than that!
My red light flickers on every now and again, and I have no idea what makes it come on. Boost pressure, oil pressure, oil feed, waste gate operation???
Does anyone have any ideas?
Cheers,
Matt Savage

Matt - hi and welcome to Toyota land. You haven't given up on L/R
products have you ? The light you refer to is an overboost indicator. I
had a 4Runner intercooled and the boost turned up. On hard acceleration
the switch woul trip and the light would stay on until the engine was
switched off. It would then reset itself until the next "overboost". You
might have a dodgy switch - connect a boost gauge to see what is going
on.

ummm, interesting. Thanks Gareth. I have every intention of fitting a great big stonkin' intercooler, and I will turn up the boost a bit when this is done. (and fuelling etc..)
Do you know where this switch is?
As for Land Rovers, I still have my fire breathing 1950 80" V8 series one if I want to let off some steam!
Cheers,
Matt
Still cold in Derbyshire, I wish it would snow then I can go and play!

Hello Matt,
Welcome to the club! Good to see another member with a LR/LC combo.
If your LC is exactly like mine, you have a turbo type CT-22, for
which normal pressure is between 7.1 & 9.2 psi / 49-64kPa / 0.49 -
0.63 bar.
The green LED comes on at 2.0psi (13.7 kP = 0.14kg/cm2=0.13 bar), and
the amber LED comes on at 15.4psi (105.9kPa=1.08kg/cm2=1.06 bar).
There's a simple dual pressure switch near the brake servo can. Check
this and maybe you'll find an obvious fault.

Ah-ha!! Yes, there are two switches on a bracket at the back of the air cleaner (near the servo)! That must be them. I'll fiddle about with them.
Thanks Roman.
Cheers,
Matt
