Twin batteries (again!)

Yes I know this usbject rears it's head every six months or so....so here goes again.
I disconnected both batteries on my 100 series. Upon reconnecting, there was some "beeps" from somehwere under the bonnet (sounding like warning beeps) which soon stopped.
The problem now is that the starter motor does not now spin so fast.
Suspect that this is because it's only operating on 12 volts (rather than 24 v).
I'm guessing that this may be due to the relay that kicks in upon starting to provide the starter motor with 24 volts ?
Everything else works fine.
Info required:
1. Where is the relay that switches 12v / 24v located on 100 series (4.2 Diesel) ?
2. Is there a proceedure for disconnecting and re-connecting the two batteries ? (and avoiding this problem in future)
Neither the owners handbook or my Ellery workshop manual mentions this BTW: The Ellery manual is not worth
buying, IMHO. My apologies, in advance, if this subject has been done to death in past posts
Cheers

There is no 24 v on the 100 series. Just plain 12 v, although 2 batteries
in parallell.
Means: no relay.
The beeping might have been the intruder alarm system.
If the starter spins slower, it's either low charge/voltage, bad battery,
or a bad/loose connection somewhere.
If the batteries have been disconnected for more than a minute or so, the
engine might run a bit rough to start with, as the ECU is learning the
ropes again.

PS
If it was a 24 v starter running on 12 v, it wouldn't spin; but just move
slightly.

Hi,
Basic trouble-shooting tells you that when you have just done something
and the operation is different, it is down to whatever you did. I would take
the leads off again and check the connections as you put them back on.
Include the other end of the cables.

When changing to new batteries, you can change one at the time. Thereby
maintaining continous supply of 12 v to the electronics.
The short time (a few minutes) the two unmatched batteries are connected
in parallell won't do any harm as long as the old one is not shorted (one
cell or more).

Thanks Ugo
Point taken, although my understanding is that these systems utilise a 12
volt starter motor but feed it 24 volts for that brief start up period. thus
ensure a rapid turnover of the engine. I relate all this to my 80 series,
and assumed that the 100 series worked likewise ?
