Tyre prices and wiggling wheels

Hi Jon
Are the coopers any good? At that price I guess there will be a compromise
between cost and performance but at more than half the price of the better
know brands its got to be a winner.
After all the advice from the board I went home jacked up the passenger side
and grabbed the wheel top and bottom and guess what clunk, click as it
visibly rocked back and forth. Hmmm! As I did not have all the bits yet I
restrained myself from pulling it all apart there and then but opened up the
grease point on the knuckle and stuck a screwdriver in. It came out oily
and no grease so where has all the grease gone as it was half full a month
ago???? Could it be sucked into the diff and that would explain the fact
that the diff is filling up with sludgy gunk?????
Anyway I have ordered all the bits to do the wheel bearing and the oil seals
for both sides and will get onto it next week. So the car is now off road
and I get to drive the wife's new Saab Convertible. Yes!
Total cost ?106 + bits and bobs.

Hi Simon,
Were you able to see if it was just from the wheel bearing or if there was
also some movement in the knuckle?
If the inner axle seal has gone you will probably have a two way flow of oil
and grease.

SNIP...
I am using 'Conqueror AT's'. Some of the local peacekeepers vehicles have
them fitted I noticed a while ago. Not the those in military cammo but
those used for staff and civvy support staff. I spent some time with the
SFOR video unit whom we had help us make a TV series for Paddy Ashdown's
office. They use Pajero's and they performed very well in some of the
conditions we had to cope with. (When you are filming minefields and have
to go right up to them you are very glad of the adequate performance of
your vehicle to get you out !) The alternative is usually Pirelli
Scorpions which are superb in all their patterns, but twice the price.
You may also have noticed that I have a 'phobia' about tyres that do not
have - what I consider to be anyway - adequate water channels. The Cooper
AT's combine a good blocky tread with good drainage from the footprint.
They are well mannered on tarmac at speed and not noisy, having good siping
for snow etc too. But they grip well in mud etc. But I have them fitted on
a car that is more a tarmac cruiser than offroader.
Wiggly wheels.
I agree that the grease must have worked back into the diff. But I assume
that your driveshafts have been turning. Difficult to see how it would work
backwards much if either the shafts were not turning or that it moved under
vacuum from a cooling diff if the diff got hot and the breather was not
working - i.e. clogged with crud. But the contents of the diff suggest that
it has grease in it.
One point on the loose bearings. This is quite rare, in my experience at
least, but when I have seen it twice, it was caused by someone not using
the locktab properly. Remember it should be between both nuts. Often non
TLC experienced fitters replace the tab under the bottom nut, and they will
inevitably eventually come loose.

Hi Jon
Lucky for me I am not in the market for new tyres yet but will keep your
comments in mind for the future.
I appreciate wiggling bearings is not a technical description, its not
really a wiggle more a clicking when you rock the wheel top and bottom and
is coming from what appears to be the hub.
However, all will be revealed tonight once I start pulling it all apart.
If its an exciting evening photos will appear on this list tomorrow.
Julian, thanks for the advice Friday will take it all in and keep you
posted, by the way it rained all the way to Deal and back so the Saab got a
good rinsing, which meant I had to wash the car Sunday morning or I would
never be allowed to borrow it again. I have now learnt that you don't want
to buy a black non metallic painted car as it seems to show up all the bug
mess and it will take ages to clean!!
All the best
