veg oil

Hi Guys
Has anyone had any bad or poor comments about the veg oil or rapoleim stuff
used as a diesel replacement. A guy sent me some info on a fleet of 11
transits that all stopped working and had to have new heads fitted because
of a grunge like stuff that you would find around a chip pan.

I've done a lot of research in to this in the past month. There is only one
fuel system conversion that will take veg. oil, diesel, bio diesel or
whatever (they dont guarantee wvo), and that is a German one. Most engines,
without this conversion, will gum up from the glycerine in the oil. Most of
the bio diesel process is to take out the glycerine. If you want to start
learning go to the 'journey to forever' website. There is a wealth of
information there, including links to other sites.
Regards, Clive.

If you literally just run it on veg oil it won't last long I'm sure. You
need to thin the oil in some way and there are a variety of ways to do
that. It's something best looked into in detail to satisfy yourself you
know what you're getting into and choose the option that suits you
rather than just copying the bloke next door and hoping it works.
We're happy with our 80's running on veg oil, I've lost track of how
many miles they've done on it now but it's lots!
Best Regards,
Jon.

Hi John,
Welcome back ;-)
I run Biodiesel made from waste veg oil when I can get it and have no
problems at all - actually the car runs a lot better on it (more power,
smoother running, quieter).
The only problem you can get with biodiesel is that it strips clean
your fuel lines leading to a fair bit of gunk from diesel bug, etc
getting caught in the filter so they usually advise that you should
change your filter after the first tank or two.
I haven't had any problems yet after about a dozen tank fulls, but I
did clean out the tank, all the fuel lines (lots of black slime came
out) and injector pump about 6 months ago.
A friend has had problems with his Colorado when it dies died half a
mile from home due to a blocked filter after about 1-2 tanks full.
Hopefully Jon Wildsmith will chip in on this, he runs pretty well neat
veg oil in his 80.

I am glad to hear that. I am happy with mine as is at the moment. It was
just a company in Dublin I think converted their fleet of vans to this veg
oil and had (it was reported ) trouble with the heads of the engines, thats
why I thought id say it to the list. Just to be safe.

Hi Julian
So is there a difference between the bio diesel and this rapoleim stuff,
hope I spelt it correctly.

Hi John,
Never heard of Rapoleim.
You can read about the Biodiesel I use at http://www.goodfuels.co.uk

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this list but wanted to add to this thread that I've recently had the ATG twin tank conversion done to my VX 4.2 (24 valve) in order to run on pure veg oil (except when starting & purging for a couple of mins before turning off). No probs as yet, it always starts as usual in the morning (after about half a second) so the quick purge venting system that came with the kit must do what it says and fully clear the fuel pump of any veg oil. The exhaust is no smokier and the idling sounds sweeter. It's early days as I've only done about 3000 miles but will let the list know if I develope any probs in the longer turn. All in all I'm very pleased.
Seb
