Viscous fan coupling

Hi Guys
I would like to know what a few things about this fan coupling please.
Is there a maintainance time for it and if so what do you do.
How long would it take.
Can a mecanically challanged person tackle it.
When do you need to replace hte whole thing.
How do you know if something is going wrong with it.
I asked on the 80 site but no takers, maybe too stupid a question for those
guys presant company excluded of course.
I looked in the Haynes manual and theres nothing there I could find in
relation to it.
I know its important for the cooling of the engine and thats why im
interested.
If it were to go bad or give up would this happen slowly or all of a sudden.
What would the hints be that it was failing, and how long would you have
between the start of a problem to having to replace it.
I herd you should replace the whole clutch assembly after 100,000 miles,
well mine has done 200,000 and am wondering.
Am I worrying too much again.

John, another case of - "if it ain't broke -- don't fiddle with it". If your vehicle is cooling properly and the fan is revolving as it should then leave well alone.
My vehicle has done 99,000 miles and from the service history I am not aware that the fan unit has ever been touched. It works fine and I will leave it alone until the day that it starts to cause me a problem. Life is too short to look for problems that don't really exist.
You would be better off getting those DIN connectors wired up in the rear of the vehicle ready for next trip abroad !!

Hey Gareth
Just looking for info as usual, just like to know so if or when it happens I
will know what to do or get some one else to do and what the symtoms are of
a failing one.
So if the cooling starts giving problems thats a possible cause YES.
Do you know more about it.
I know what you mean about the Din sockets, its another little thing I have
been thinking about but yet not done.
Yea another little trip Hum, say like the spring cruiser day out like
Sailisbury. I will have to look at the posts regarding this DIN socket
thing to refresh my poor old memory.
Cheers

And mine has just passed 118k with the same total lack of attention.
With the radiator blind right down for 2 months now I've had no cooling
problems at all.

I've made someone happy then!
I *think* it warms up a little faster in the mornings, and my mpg in the
"short runs taking the children to the school bus" regime has definitely
improved - we haven't done worse than 27 mpg yet this winter, and are
hovering around 29 mpg on longer runs.
All of which suggests that a slightly hotter engine is doing rather
better, and makes we wonder whether fitting an intercooler would improve
economy at all - because surely it would just have the effect of
lowering the engine temperature at normal cruising speed?
Discuss anyone?
