Hi all
I'm on the prowl for a good auto diesel 80. If anyone knows of any up
for sale then I'm happy to go and have a look at it. Ideally it needs to
be in A1 condition and price is a little less important than condition.
I'm in no great hurry so will wait for the right one to turn up. I don't
necessarily mind if it needs minor'ish work doing, say if it needs new
wheel bearings, CV's etc but the major mechanicals MUST be tip-top.
Second item I need is a little less dramatic - I need a standard VX
alloy rim. If anyone has one spare in exchange for a few tokens then let
me know?
Thanks everyone.
Pete

Hi Peter,
Are you interested in a post 95 24valve Jap Import (I would be!) or a
UK spec pre-95 12valve model?
The advantage of the 24valve is that it is a great engine, however the
Jap models are unlikely to come with the 3rd row of seats or front and
read diff locks.
Unfortunately we only got the 24valve engines in manual form in Europe
due to some emmissions issues.
If you want any hints/tips/hand holding I looked at a stack of them
last August for some other people so have a reasonably good feel for
them - also since it won't be for me I won't get swayed by the shiney
paintwork and cool stereo!

I need a minimum of six seats + lockers.
I would prefer a UK model from an insurance and spares availability
perspective but would also prefer the 24 valve so it looks like a manual
then. Shame.
Don't know really, auto box is a big plus for me so maybe the 12-valve
may have to be considered? Or an import, but then lockers are essential
too + the third row of seats of course - unless anyone has a spare set
and they can be retrofitted..... Aaaarrrgggghh - too many decisions for
this time of night!

Hi Peter,
Yes it is a tricky descision - I'll be going down the same route later this
year.
You CAN get imports with the lockers, but they are few and far between -
always when ringing up ask the owner if the have a circular dial to the
left of the steering wheel - don't bother asking if it has lockers, they
won't know!
On the 3rd row seats, some have said that they cannot be retro fitted
because the body is slightly different, however I have nagging thought in
the back of my mind that as far as I know all the bodies were the same -
yes they may have welded in extra brackets and supports for the seats and
seat belts, like they did with the rear tyre carriers ()do you recall the
thread with John B a while back), so if you manage to get all the bits off
a UK spec model you should be OK (in theory). With people kitting them out
for overlanding, the rear seats are often the first things to go so you
should be able to find some!
Having said that I suspect that you might even be able to find an import
with the 3rd row seats.
Obviously the key thing to consider is that there may be a
licensing/insurance issue depending on the number of seats and what the car
is classified as carrying.
I have a contact in Japan who is happy to track down a specific spec model
and help with the importing and will probably go through him if the figures
are OK.

Me too
I definately want the 24V, I'm easy on manual/auto, but I prefer auto. The 3rd row of seats I can take or leave.
I want lockers, but as my 80 will be setup as a "touring" vehicle, rather than a full blown overlander, I can fit ARB's/detroits later.
So I'm thinking a Jap import might suit me better, as its easier for me to fit lockers, than to comprimise on some of the other features. Leather and auto would really nice, but difficult/expensive to retrofit for example.

IIRC The tricky points are the recessed hooks in the floor sunk into the
bodywork crossmember, as well as some of the seatbelts anchoring points
(D pillar, top ?).
The side mounts fot the seats are just spot welded, but the shape is not
the easiest thing to reproduce. Personally, I would retrofit only if I
had some originally-fitted body cuts to take panel parts from, or if I
had a lot of time on my hands.

The third row seats are not easily retro-fittable. There are Two
reccesed hooks in the floor, already mentioned, and also the fixings
on the wheel arches are not brackets that are put on, they are
recesses formed in the wing. I looked at doing mine and gave it up as
too much hassle.

Looks like it'll have to be a UK 12 valve auto or a manual 24valve then.

I guess then with a scrapped donor body, a plasma cutter and mig welder
you should be OK, so a little more involved than the brackets etc for
JB's wheel carrier.

Been following the wanted thread with some interest.
My car is a 1993/4 HDJ-81 - not sure why it is an 81 but there you go. I
tracked it down at a dealer in Thetford and it is basically an import, with
a 12v diesel engine with altitude sensor for the fuel system (works well),
auto gear box, centre diff lock button on the dash, centre diff lock in low
ratio (which I haven't modded), front and rear diff lock switch below
steering wheel, (amazing to drive the car with all diff locks on - like to
trying to steer a super tanker without a rudder) but when I first opened the
boot to check the load area, I was amazed to9 see this weekend
camping/picnic setup in the back. A light aluminium frame had been bolted
into the floor, there was a small sink with two plastic water containers for
drinking and non drinking water, a small gas burner, single ring powered by
gas cartridges and felt covered chip board which could be folded out into a
bed once the rear seat rests had been bent forward. I though long and hard
about keeping it all but decided to remove it all - and now regret it. II
could have kept the frame as a starter for a shelving system etc etc. I have
the japanese manual for both the car and the camper stuff that was in the
back and think the car was sold as a weekend special. I've kept the small
gas cooker but have yet to use it. When away on a trip, we brew up using a
small burner that screws onto a propane/butane cylinder and cook on a 2 ring
cooker with a grill...
It seems these 'specials' are around but may be few and far between. My car
is great for me; the only change I would make would be for a 24v engine but
I would want to keep my auto box.
Sorry about the long winded message zzzzzzzzz.
Jeremy

Ebay auction 4604986863 for Landcruiser bits lists a set of VX alloys
with tyres for =A380. Says wheels need refurbishing but if it's for a
spare then do you care? Seems a bargain especially if you put 4 back on
ebay.
I'd have em if I didn't already have too many wheels ;-)
Jon.
