I read somewhere recently, can't remember where, that the newer bearing shells have grooves to improve oil retention and hence lubrication. I'd imagine that you have those now, and can probably forget about it.
If it's any consolation, and it probably isn't, the Gresley A1 .. A4 pacific locomotives (eg Flying Scotsman, Mallard, Silver Link, etc) had a similar problem with their central big end bearings. The initial fix was to fit a "stink bomb" of amyl acetate (pear-drops), violets or aniseed that went off when the bearing temp exceeded ~160deg Fahrenheit, the smell giving the driver some warning of impending failure.
However the ultimate solution was a change in the bearing design to one based on Great Western practice that effectively encapsulated more oil on the bearing surface. So maybe Toyota have got the right idea!
