Weird Vibrations

Morning Julian
You are describing exactly the symptoms that my cruiser is suffering
from too. I also just noticed a vibration under load last weekend, and
like yours it only manifests itself between 65 and 70 on the motorway.
If you accelerate thru it the vibration disappears. And Like you I am
stumped too! I have checked all the same places and can find nothing
obvious. But I think it is something to do with the exhaust and I will
change over the mountings as the garage that fitted it did not rubber
mount it due to issues with trying to get it onto the car.
Does it feel like it is coming from any particular direction in the
car?? Could it be a rear wheel that has lost its balancing weights and
is vibrating??
All the best

Hi Simon,
I've not yet attempted to drive through it - if you can I am inclined to
believe that it would be a balance issue with the propshafts or wheels.
Difficult to pin down so far, just haven't had time to take for an
extensive drive.
Just to add, it's quite a low frequency vibration.

Sympthoms seem 'same' as what I get.
I swapped with a buddy's prop-shaft (had taken out front first and CDL-
still same issue) in the rear and solved the problem.
My u-joints looked fine, grease all ok just shaft not balanced. (his was
recently balanced!)
Put back in my one again and problem back. Not got around yet 2 getting it
balanced.
Must b all those CO rocks I keep hitting :)
On a side note I've replaced 3 UJ in my rear prop shaft (in the 10 yrs) as
well so I presume my 'lift' is not 'proper' (also recently getting a tiny
weep from rear diff, so suspect thats now complaining as well).
138K on 1996 FZJ80 and finally got rain in Colorado today :) - snow
predicted during week.

Re Did they re-balance the prop - no. That would require a competent &
pro-active Mr Toyo Man - something in short supply in Paddy land. In
fact I found the Toyota garages in Morocco streets ahead of the Irish
ones. Probably because Mr Moroccan Toyo man has more experience with the
LC's.
In my experience Mr Paddy Toyo man suffers from chronic Yaris
Syndrome.

Hi Niall,
If you shop around you should be able to find a local company that
could do it for you - ask at your local car shop.

Hi Niall
I said to myself I wouldn't ask but when a question gets into my head ,well
I have to ask.
When you say the (prop balanced), you do mean the pop shaft.
How would that be done and what would cause it to be unbalanced in the first
place.
Is this the long drive shaft that runs from the front axel back.
If so how could a thing that thick and strong get damaged or unbalanced.
cheers

John
Yes - I mean the prop shaft. As for how to balance - not sure exactly
what's involved but assume it gets unbalanced by wear on the UJ's etc.
If unbalanced I would assume the UJ's would wear faster

Niall,

they'll balance it for you if you unbolt it and bring it to them. i get
them to change cv's and boots for me on all our work vans, they are
quick and very good on pricing so its not worth us doing the job ourselves.
