My friend named Jacques, is French, lives in the " Lozere" region, has bought himself a 1994 cruiser 80 HDT for touring, comes with almost everything including a roof tent. BFG s , you know, all the right kit, about 200k on the clock, how much? For me, a staggering €24,000, and his remark was, " good value" it seems that 12valve cruisers are highly prized on the continent, not only in France but especially in Germany! Here's a thought, a 5 years old low mileage (kilometre age?) Range Rover is €1000s less than a high mileage 20 year old Toyo, what can we conclude? I dunno, but, my thoughts are, a truck ready to use, kitted up like the 80, will never be offered again, they were, still are, unique in off road vehicles. If I had the money, I would have an 80 rebuilt as they do in the states, and then keep it . What's your thioughts?

As has been said on here before, 80's are difficult vehicles to value. So much depends on condition/history before you even get to 'add-ons' like body/suspension lifts, winches and specialist off roading/expedition kit. If the above mention vehicle was for sale in the US it would probably fetch even more given the fact that diesel 80's were never sold new over there and are even more sought after. There's very few places on our small, overcrowded island that you can do any serious expedition type off roading or wild camping so the demand for fully kitted out vehicles will be less. On the continent and across the pond it's a different story which may account for some of the valuation difference IMO. I recently had a valuation of £4k for one of the last 24v diesels sold which would almost certainly be worth over twice that anywhere else.

All used cars are a stupid price in France! Why? I dunno, but perhaps its to do with the fact there are fewer cars available? no company car culture like in UK. People tend to hang on to their cars as well.I have seen plenty of 10/12k€ Collies for sale, many with 200k km or recon engines, and these are 3 door pre 1999! If only they didnt mind what side of the car they had the steering wheel, we could make a killing!

It's much the same here in Aus, so I think that the UK is the one that has it wrong!

80 series diesels are only just dropping to under $8k here, but that's with north of 300,000km on them. 60 series diesels are $5k ish (400,000km+) and 70 series... well don't ask! BJ70's are about $6-8k, sometimes less if unregistered etc

:oops::lol:

Do the people in France earn more money than here? Maybe they do in Oz also, I have seen an advert in France for new 80 series engines for €10,000 , that's correct 10 thousand, not many folk will have paid that for the car! I don't know anyone who would buy an engine for 10 grand, ( I would if I could) it's just so bizarre that these trucks get so much more appreciation than here in dear old blighty. However, I would like to mention that when these vehicles were introduced in the early nineties, the 4x4 press at that time did NOT rejoice over the magnificence of them, I seem to remember derision, "behemoth" being one description, were they frightened by how good they were? I was on the cusp of buying one in 1994, but read the reports in the press, stupidly I bought an ES Discovery, yeah I know, but we all make mistakes!

Not too fussed what mines worth, it's mine and it's all that counts lol.
Didn't pay silly money for it and have spent more then I dare tell the wife

Certainly not, well not down here anyway! I think half the problem is the French do not do internet shopping in the main. My neighbour is horrified I buy tyres from that dark place the ineternet. They are not the same tyres that you can buy from the garage at 3x the price he claims. Why shop abroad when you can buy the real thing from home for 3x the price? They will catch up eventually I guess. They have to, lots of stuff I but I get from across the border in Germany or Switzerland!

What's my 80 worth? to anybody else not a lot, to me, priceless!

Mine is worth £9500, if the insurance ever have to pay out!!

That maybe what you stated when you took out the policy but I bet they would only pay out what the market value says.

For me Chas has hit the nail on the head.

I bought mine at a time when I didn't have a clue as what I was buying. It was a 4x4 and that's what I needed at the time. It was old and that worried me because I knew the spares would be expensive here. I have no problem with old cars it's not that I want the latest this, and that.

So I could have bought a Trol, a Jeep, a Pajero, Terrano, or even an Aro, but by chance I got an 80. After looking into it, I realized I had one of the best offroad cars ever built.

It had 212k kms, some badly repaired dents, a grindy sort of sound on 1st and 2nd gear, no leaks, it started first time and I took a chance. Since purchase, the parts that have failed are the starter, the radiator, the steering box shaft and the viscous fan.

I've done the BEBs because we all should, and the customary front axle refurb. It runs like a dream. I spent a few grand on the suspension lift, front and rear ARBs, winch, roof rack and 2 sets of decent tyres.

Cost me £5,000 to buy, and I must have spent more than that since, but I have no intention of adding it up. I also have no intention of selling it.

What's it worth? Priceless.

To me that is, to most it's a liability.

Nobody would offer me more than I paid, if they're sensible.

I'm not sure that sensible people by 80's

 Says it all, although I did know what I was buying as my current 80 was my second one.

The thing is, the worth of something is measured in £ or €, $ or ¥ irrespective of the worth of it to the owner, or buyer. Since buying mine, I've seen UK models for sale that make mine look like junk for the same money, assuming the mechanical components comparable.

The specs are much higher in the UK but mine had full lockers which made it worthwhile for me. I don't know about France, but a UK guy selling 4x4 suspension upgrades in Romania told me he had traced (trough the registration authorities) less than 100 80 series LCs in Romania. I know of about 10 of these, but it makes it quite a rare truck in Romania. Hence none to be found in the breakers!

In the UK, they're scrapped because of relatively minor faults, which for me is quite sad.

Registration problems would make importing one here prohibitive, but I've been tempted to trailer a "scrap" good one here for spares. It's a big hassle, which is why I haven't done it yet, but I'm still considering it.

The point is, what it's worth to me, is not it's selling price on the open market.

My 80 if the pic comes out landcruiser tracking (2).JPGlandcruiser tracking (2).JPG

Looks a bit rough round the edges Frank, I thought a man of your background would have known how to look after a Cruiser properly. :laughing-rolling:

Andy

Now that's a pride and joy Frank!

To behold!

On my reasoning, tell us what that's worth!

You should be in bed already Andy. Have you played the video of how to change engine oil appearing next to your post?:techie-studyingbro::icon-biggrin:. That's you at the back of the class.

For a valuation why not try one of the online vehicle purchase websites? Just make sure you're sat down first.
