Dyf,
My 92 '80 has 16inch steel wheels.
If appropriate take-up Toby's offer. Don't lose a good 80 for the sake of
the wheels. You are right wanting steels if you go offroad, but if you buy
aftermarket wheels make sure they are like the OEM's at 8mm thick. Quite a
lot of aftermarket are 5-6mm and obviously a waste of time.
My 80 also has drums on the rear and they never give me any problems and I
always seem to stop extremely well going down mountains ! Naturally I
always check them after going through fords but they never play-up. But
they do their share and that is reflected by the fact that I have only ever
put on one set of front pads in 4 years. As its not lifted the
proportioning valve has never been tampered with either, so its set as
factory setting.
I accept that if you are in muddy water 4 days a week that discs all-round
will be better, but do you expect that sort of driving ? (I am in a lot of
water 2 days a week).
As for the spare hoist, it fascinates me as to just how it works ! It has
a ratchet mechanism which clicks on the way up and then again on the way
down. But from an engineering point of view one would expect there to be a
release lever to free the ratchet to let it down. But there is nothing, so
I daub it with grease at regular intervals and it appears to perform ! If
it comes with the car - separately - then a good clean-up will show what is
wrong - maybe a broken ratchet spring. Again, not something to stop you
buying a good sample of an 80.
Best of luck.
