Which battery is the 'Main', & which the 'Accessory'?

Sorry that I'm appearing rather stupid today, but which battery is which? is
the Main battery the one with the Ground cable attached to it?
Ma beast is wired a bit differently with things being at the right that
should be at the left, so I'm not sure which battery is which?
And, with regards to charging, can I charge both together or is it better
charging one then the other? the Main battery being the first one to charge?
Cheers
Renate

Renate,
There is no 'main' battery, they are wired up as one 12v one. You
can charge them both together, just put a 12v charger on the one you
can get to, usually the one with the earth strap on. All this assumes
you have a standard Toy. setup, not some weird 4x4 'super jungle
pack'.

That's good! I've misplaced my own charger so am waiting for a neighbours...
I can get to both of them, but I will use the one with the Grounding strap.
Thanks for this!

Hi Clive,
What do you mean by "The one you can get to" On my Cruiser both batteries
are easily accessible and both have an earth strap, by which I assume you
mean the cable from the negative terminal to earth?

Chas,
You are talking a petrol engine. The diesel employs two batteries
wired in parallel normally. These batteries switch through a relay to
wire them in series for 24 volt starting. Because of this arrangement
one of the batteries does not have a strap to earth, it is done via
the contactor. This 'non earthed' battery is on the right looking from
the front. Because it is not earthed directly it is inadvisable to use
it for anything other than its intended use, if you had a charger on
it, for example, and the starter circuit was called in, you would have
12volts from the charger on the +12 - +24 volt half of the battery
supply. To encourage the non-use of this battery for the likes of jump
starting Toyota have put a cover over it with a warning on about not
using it, making it a tools job to uncover it.

Ah! thank you Clive,it all becomes clear now, except for one thing, there is
no cover on either of my batteries and no warnings anywhere that I can see.

I have to agree with Bernard (is that a first name?, or should I say
Benoit?), I have not seen a 24volt starting 80 without the cover on
one battery.

All you people that have had battery covers removed by previous
owners. To be honest I nearly removed mine, I did not like the
unbalanced look. I was going to get another one, then I read the label
on a UK one and saw the sense in leaving it alone.
