Whine/screech

Morning all
I have an occasional whine that sounds like a belt whine/screech. Belts are
relatively new, tension checked recently and redone, the screech is worse
when the engine is cold... So just wondering if this could be anything else
like water pump, tension pulley etc.
I=B9ve just done a thorough check and tension again but just wondered if this
was the sign of a big thing to come...

HDJ81, no engine mods other than addditional a/t oil cooler =AD other mods
include most of the usual suspects...

I used to have the same whine on the camry I had and was told to spray a little wd40 on the belt. Just a little and the reason was that the belts whine when they get too dry. But I would think if you put too much on the belt will go flying.

Jeremy,
After starting the engine spray the belts with WD40 and see if it
happens again to eliminate one cause. Maybe it's worth removing the
belts to check if the pulleys are OK and if the alternator rotates
freely.

I get the occasionally belt squeal in the first mile or so on a cold wet
morning when water splashes on the alternator belts - not unreasonable
when it is recharging the batteries following powering that pre-heater
screen. But not otherwise.

Do you have a pre-heater screen? And, if so, how are your batteries?

Have you tried wobbling the water pump shaft the fan sits on? Shouldn't
be any movement at all, if there is then could possibly be the water
pump bearing.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I=B9ll check it through on Saturday. Batteries are about a year old, Optima
gel batteries. I=B9ll check the water pump bearing and use a bit of the old
WD40 and see what happens. Now that it is getting warmer it feels easier to
spend a day on the car...

Jeremy,
It's the alternator belt, it often happens when it's cold and
it's nothing to worry about.

It does mean that the belt is too loose though and should be correctly
adjusted.
Constant slipping of the belt causes premature wear to both the belt and
the pulleys.
