Window grilles

Hi y=B9all
Anybody made up grilles for the rear side and tailgate windows...? I=B9m
thinking of doing it before going to N Africa in September but would prefer
to use a Pentagon film if I can afford it. Just wondered if anybody had made
the grills and how much they might set me back?
Been following the ABS thread as I have occasional brake pull to the left
but no abs lights come on. I might have a stone caught in the caliper or
something more serious...

Jeremy,
I bought a sheet of weld mesh for about =A312 ages ago and still haven't got
round to making up the grills. I was going to use 20mm angle for the frame
and attach internally with riv-nuts, I reckon the 3 grilles would have cost
about =A340 in materials, though this was about five years ago. I did consider
putting them outside but it does make your car look like a riot van.
The standard opening rear side windows are VERY easy to break into, without
breaking the glass - though for obvious reasons I'm not sure I should say
how. On my list of jobs is to replace the passenger side one with
polycarbonate - supposedly very hard to break but easy to scratch - and the
driver's side with an alloy panel. (I sometimes need to see through the PS
one when reversing a trailer).
If you go ahead please share photos of the finished product with the list...
All the best,
Toby 1990 HDJ80 UK

Thanks for this. Be happy to publish pictures when I'm done. My car is an
import so it has the one piece windows at the back. For aesthetic reasons I
would rather use Pentagon film but I may lose my remaining arm and leg...

Window grillesDear Jeremy
Block out film on the back is ok to hide any goodies, and I think the only stuff that is truly truly non see-through is reflective. I can recommend a place that did a good job, B pillar backwards, in Bristol for 200gbp.
I once heard a tour guide being scathing about the concept of a semi-fortified castle, the argument went something like; what stops the invaders going round to the back door. As far as I can see a grill simply tells people to smash the front window because there might be something in the back worth having.
Good luck
Tony

Sorry guys, it's poor reasoning . If you have all your possessions at
the back of the car you don't play games with the locals pretending
it's all rubbish not worth their bother. They are smarter than that
tour guide quoted by Tony. And yes, you have to to do the lot (that is
the cargo space), including steel mesh fitted behind the front seats.

Not my experience after half-a-life in Africa. I would avoid your tour
guides advice but then Roman has already expressed my thoughts on this.

A pressure activated alarm can solve the problem of being broken into whilst
sleeping on the roof. Julian, as with many things, may be the expert on the
alarm side.

Not got to the grandchildren stage yet. And I have to say, I hate camping
surrounded by other vehicles unless in a small group on a difficult piste. I
know, antisocial...thanks for the info tho'.
