Obviously it isn't the best idea to use hot water due to the possibility of
cracking the glass.
Other options to consider are:
There is a rubber treatment that repels water that I have used on door seals
to stop them freezing, if I remember I will let you know what it is.
Other option is to keep a blanket in the car and throw it over the windscreen
when parked - it should keep the frost off.
On the wiper design - my '94 has the loop at the end for the plastic fittings
- have you tried wandering around you sure scrap yard to see what other 80s
are using and try to find some with the hooks on the end?

Thanks Julian - et al. this is getting out of hand boys !
I just mentioned that my wipers have a hard life coz they get iced when I
am driving all day sometimes. Not a question of keeping frost off when
parked or defrosting etc., and yes hot water on a freezing screen is not
good, I have watched one idiot do that to a lovely big Volvo in Scotland
one day. It made a nice sound as it crazed. But warm water is OK as long as
it lasts but as soon as you get going again the snow accumulates in 5 minutes.
I have rainex for the screen but its no good at keeping the ice of the
wiper blades and all the gubbins. They work after a fashion but they wear
out quickly, quite naturally I suppose.
Nice to hear about the hooked arms. Yes I went to the scrappie, and no they
have none.
Roman thanks for the great offer. I will have one last go and if no luck
will send a picture.
Cheers

Jon,
Where I come from, freezing temperatures in winter are the nom (just
as seering hot summers). Wiper blades usually don't last more than a
few weeks on wiindshields covered with grained ice, while scrapping is
the best way to get the windscreen free of ice quickly. I personally
prefer a Webasto space heater turned on 10-15 min before I drive. Not
only it will defrosts all windows, but also warm up the whole
interior.
