My 80 is hard on wiper blades as for the winter they are usually encrusted
with ice despite using neat fluid in the washers. Before now I have bought
spares in UK. I forgot to bring some out when returning in August and I
have attempted to buy some locally. The only problem is that my arms are
the straight-ended type with the blade secured with 2 small screws. I
bought a pair of 'Champion' blades which on the back of the box showed a
selection of suitable fittings included - wrong ! The fittings were for
the hooked type of arm. Since then I have looked everywhere for the right
type of arm fitting but can't find it. Even Bosch make a plastic fitting
with a small pivot shaft onto which the blade is attached parallel to the
arm (a bit too sloppy for me), but I can't find those here any more. I
have found a very cheaply made Oriental pair with a crudely pressed metal
fitting which allows the blade to attach parallel to the arm with the
screws. But the quality of the rest of the blade is obviously very bad. I
can get by for a while with some other push-on plastic fittings that hang
onto the small raised pip between the screw holes, but wonder if toy have
changed the configuration of the wiper arms preferably with a hook end.
That being the case I will attempt to get some, allowing of course for mine
being LHD too. Any ideas please? (remembering that I have no toy dealers
here).
Julian, the past few days has seen a need to have the facility to paste
pictures in posts to the list. I remember when you approached us about
starting ELCO and we talked about the software you did promise that you
would find some free software that allowed this. Like we can do in the
Pajero Club postings and others. I see even 80scool has taken some
criticism for not upgrading out of Yahoo for the same reasons. I have also
been looking at the free 'Proboards' list software that does similar
things, its used by a couple of property lists that I look at - but
Proboards somehow does not like my domain name ! Anyway any update on that
improvement yet please? thanks.
Cheers

Hi Jon,
Just a quick note on the picture - there are no restriction on posting pictures or files, however you need to remember that they will go to everyone so keep file sizes to a minimum.
The new system I am working on will strip them out replacing them with thumbnails that will link through to the full sized pictures on the website.
All being well the new system sould be in place by the new year.
Cheers,
Julian

Re wiper blades: in my poorer days I found that it was actually very easy to dismantle the blade, remove the rubber, then to put in a new bit. I used to recycle my front blades to the back wiper, cutting them to size as required.
Could you transfer rubber from generic new blades to your existing ones in this way? Just a thought.
The other thing I used to do (in the days when we had winters here in the UK) was to keep an old washing up liquid bottle - Valerie Singleton size - and fill it with warm, not hot, water. This could then be squirted selectively, and from a distance, at wiper blades etc to defrost them.
I appreciate that it may be too cold out there for that to work with plain water, but maybe adding windscreen washer fluid to the bottle contents would work.

I had the same problem about two years ago, I bought some more wiper bits from Halfords and in spite of the information leaflets saying they were okay, they were wrong - in the end I had the whole units replaced because they'd rusted through anyway...I guess I could have saved money if I'd done it a different way, at that time I had the money, now I don't...so its time for scrimping and saving for every bit of replacement 80s bits.....The latest foible - guess who lost her cap for the Power Steering fluid - I hadn't tightened it up enough and I guessed it worked lose and literally popped off - at the time I was driving back (rather too fast, probably) on my local narrow B'roads, and it wasn't until I fixed the exhaust this weekend and I checked for any other damage to the exhaust segments that I noticed this. You can guess what happened next - I stressed out and rang around frantically to every toyota 'affiliated' garage in Bristol & Bath, sourced this part that they (in Bath) ordered for me on the weekend and I collect it tomorrow - =A311! for this!
Doh! I'm I crazy or what?...

Hello all,
I'm not quite sure how Jon's wipers are different from mine (which
seem to be OEM), but when one of the plastic end pieces broke off,
managed to get from Halfords an adapter kit (it cost ca 3 quid). With
new blades picked up from a scrapyard off another toyota iI had no
problem to match the two, Another option replacing complete arms and
blades with ones that have a different blade fitting. I am sure the
fitting of the arm to the splined pivot is not unique to Toyota..
