Yet Another Injector Question - Replace Injectors? Or Just The Seal?

Hi guys,

Happy christmas/new year, hope you're all keeping positive and testing negative :)

So after many months of driving my 120, letting it idle a bit in the morning when cold so the tapping would stop from injectors, I got my first bit of white smoke. Not enough to declare a new pope, but enough to signal to me that I need to park the car up and sort out the injectors.

I'm going to be doing the job myself, as I want to do the EGR modification as well as other bits and pieces I've noticed need doing with it. I've also seen the price of the injectors!

I know the oft spoken about problems with injectors are the copper seals. I had a quick conversation (although not much else) with Toyota about it and I think my Land Cruiser had the seals done a few years ago. I don't know at what mileage or anything like that, and my local Toyota are a bit crap to deal with.

It's on 155,000 miles now, and often on the Facebook groups people are on about changing injectors. Now I thought the issues were down to the seals and that seals were the service item after 100,000 miles, so I thought I could just do the seals and leave the injectors as is. Am I wrong in assuming this? Or are the injectors themselves service items and should all be replaced?

I think the injectors are service items - they dont last forever. Also if you're going to the trouble of stripping it all down, you might as well put in new injectors - at least then you know its done.

Having said that you can use techstream to have a look at the injector stats to see if you want to bother!

The main thing on the 120 is to look at the oil pickup when you next do an oil change and see if its blocked at all.

If the seats are leaking the pickup will eventually get blocked and lead to disaster!

You've no doubt already seen the fourby4diesel videos on Youtube - but if not, take a look - theres a lot of injector videos on there.

And theres a lot of excellent info on this site of course!

You can check the injectors tolerance with techstream which will help you to understand if they need replacing. Typically most have these changed around 120k miles.

Do a search on there, there is a good thread with pics etc for the injector job and info on techstream

Cheers guys. My wallet isn't happy!

I'll find that laptop and plug it in with Techstream and see what it's giving. I've got to get the brakelines on my Peugeot done before I do the LC as I'll have nothing to drive if I don't.

It cost me about £600 all in with refurb injectors, new bolts, seals etc, when I did mine a year ago. Getting someone else to do it prob £1k with refurb ones.

I had £1,200 in my head for some reason. I can't remember why.

I've looked at Milner Off Road and the cheaper injector is out of stock (typical when you need it eh?), but PF Jones are providing refurbished injectors for £120 with the old injectors in exchange. Worth a punt really!

Had my refurbished injectors from Specialist Diesel Ltd | Diesel Parts Car Truck Bus & Tractor - [Leaving Land Cruiser Club] 90,000 miles later they're still good. Going to outlast the rest of the car at this rate.

mwhtc, make sure the Jones boys are supplying you with the correct injectors.
There are previous posts if you do a search. You pays your money and takes your choice !

Odd, I thought I had posted the guide? Mwhtc, send me a pm with your email address and I will send to you

Totally my fault for not searching about it in the first place! I'm blaming baby brain. I know it usually affects women, but I'll be damned if disturbed sleep from a collicky baby isn't having an effect on my head!

@Tractionman I'm probably inclined to go with the company suggested in the Injector Swap thread. PF Jones, from people I've spoken to, are OK apparently but they can only speak about tow bars really. Which explains how nearly every 1 star review for them on Google is about tow bars!

Hmm.... TonyP had a less than pleasant experience with injectors from them, nothing to do with tow bars so irrelevant, but all reflects back to same company. As previously said, you pays yer money and takes yer choice, do a search, its all on there. Your choice in the end mate.
Personally I would prefer to pay more from one of the others frequently recommended on here for a critical component like injectors, but were all different.

It was the SCV from them that was the problem. I got my injectors from somewhere else, I don't recall who. I would honestly avoid PF Jones.

I think I got them from the link that Rob provided

From memory they are about £250 each

I had to replace a Terrano injector years ago and I'm sure that was similar money. Fourby4 Diesel guy recons you should only buy genuine Toyota injectors, he has loads of injector info vids I see.
