I don't know how the technology works but I swear by them and I have a collection of them keeping various batteries alive - Land Cruiser, motorcycle, boat. My motorcycle battery is at least ten years old and still going strong. I must be a CTEK salesman's dream - all the gear and no idea!

For the vertical pieces you could cut lightening holes in them. You can generally cut about 50% of the depth of the 'web' away without affecting the strength. Whilst it is more work you can reduce the thickness of the top by adding some stiffening underneath. Alternatively if you know where...
