Dear Forum,

Joined you all last year and I am a greenhorn with my first 80 series. Here is a tail of woe that I hope others can benefit from.....

I purchased an Ex Yugoslavian UN HZJ80 in September last year, that was produced in 1996.

Sadly it wasn't fiitted with factory front and rear lockers and having had a factory locker on a previous Landcruiser I decided to get an after market one. Harrop E-Locker being my preferred choice as no need for air lines and seals.

Anyway I ordered the Harrop E-Locker that's advertised for the 80 series from the supplier and due to difficultiy in finding a suitable mechanic to fit the locker it took 5 months before it was in a differential specialist for fitment.

A call from the mechanic a few days latter with an accompanying whatsapp video confirmed it didn't fit.

The bottom line being even though the HZJ80 I have was manufactured in 1996 (Civilian should have fully floating axles by then I beleive) it is fitted with a semi float rear axle.......and that housing and construction type (C-Clip to secure the axle) won't take a Harrop.

The supplier won't take my unfitted locker back into stock even though they never checked with me (yes I know I should have checked here on the forum with hindsight) which axle I had and to be honest I had no idea that two different axle configurations are possible on an 80 series Landcruiser. You live and learn and this has been a very expensive lesson.....to be totally honest I didn't even know what a semi and fully floating axle was until uncovering my mistake.....so if I sound like a greenhorn I at least have the courage to admit it :disappointed: .

A couple of emails to Harrop in Australia lead to very apologetic replies for my mistake but the result is I have a brand new Harrop E-Locker for a Fully floating rear axle 80 series I now want to sell.

I understand most people on here would have spotted this blunder but as I said I just didn't know so maybe this thread might help others avoid a very costly mistake.

For sale advert to follow, shipping internationally is possible.

Kind Regards

Craig.

This is sad, and 80s without fully floating rear axles, must be as rare as hen’s teeth.
The paperwork and registration documents of my 1995 HZJ 80 refer to it as European Specification as it was (is) registered in Romania, but it had drum brakes on the rear, (since converted to disc by installing a 100 Series axle) making it unique compared with UK spec, all of which have disc brakes (rotors) on the rear.
I thought that was rare enough until I read your post.
Clearly, owners around the world beware, there’s a multitude of variants of these beasts out there some don’t even have electric windows or central locking which most of us take for granted.
Luckily mine did come with all 3 lockers, leccy windows, leccy sunroof, AC, leccy antenna and an ashtray.
If it’s not too late or too much over your budget, you could consider changing the whole rear axle from an 80 or a 100 Series at the breakers (if you can find one).

Dear Craig

I’m new on here but have been mucking about with 80’s for 20 years.

I’d be very interested in your rear locker if it’s still for sale and all the bits are there as my one is locker’less. I don’t know how it works on forums as to how such an item gets sold or discussed so I hope I’m not treading (lightly) on peoples toes.

Thanks and hope you’ve got yours fixed.

Henry

Hello Henry,

Yes I still have it as I havent got around to adverising it yet. Please pm me with a whatsapp phone number and we can chat.

Regards Craig.

Thank you Clive and sorry for not replying earlier as I've been a bit busy with 'life admin'.

Its so true what you say.....

My March 1996 car has barn doors, no central locking, sunroof, aircon or electric windows ! Rear window is marked 'UN property'.

I am very much a newbie and I just hope this thread can benefit, albeit on probably quite rare occasions, anybody that wants to retrofit a locker. I've decided to stay open diff for the moment and really learn all I can about the car.

Kind Regards Craig.
